Independent MP Pappu Yadav Arrested After Late-Night Police Action, Sparks Political Storm in Bihar

New Delhi, Feb 2026 : Independent MP from Purnia, Pappu Yadav, was arrested by police late on Friday night following a dramatic operation at his Patna residence, triggering fresh political controversy in Bihar. The arrest came amid heightened tension after an MP-MLA Special Court in Patna issued a confiscation order against Yadav and two others in connection with a decades-old case involving alleged fraudulent house rental.

According to information released by Pappu Yadav’s media team, police reached his residence close to midnight, claiming to act on a court directive related to property attachment. A video circulated by his team shows the MP questioning the legality and timing of the police action, alleging that the move was politically motivated and aimed at intimidating him.

The case in question dates back nearly 31 years to 1995. A complaint was lodged at the Gardanibagh police station in Patna by Vinod Bihari Lal, who accused the defendants of fraudulently renting his house. The complainant alleged that while taking the house on rent, it was not disclosed that the premises would be used as an MP’s office. Upon discovering the actual use of the property, the landlord approached the police, accusing the tenants of deception.

During the prolonged legal proceedings, the court reportedly observed that the accused had failed to appear before it for an extended period. As a result, the MP-MLA Special Court initially issued arrest warrants, followed by proclamations. When these measures failed to secure the presence of the accused, the court finally ordered confiscation of property, stating that persistent non-appearance could not be overlooked, irrespective of political status.

Sources familiar with the case said that the court had earlier made it clear that no one is above the law, including elected representatives. Acting on this order, police initiated action late Friday night, which culminated in Pappu Yadav’s arrest.

During the arrest, the MP made serious allegations against the police and the state administration. Speaking to supporters and media personnel, he claimed there was a conspiracy to kill him. “The police have come to arrest me. There is a conspiracy to kill me. I will not go anywhere at night. I have called my lawyer. Take me to court in the morning; I will go wherever the court sends me,” he said.

Pappu Yadav further alleged that he was being targeted as part of political vendetta. Drawing parallels with the COVID-19 period, he claimed similar conspiracies had been hatched against him in the past. “The life of an MP is in danger in Bihar,” he said, adding that those in authority feared him because of his activism, including his involvement in raising the Jehanabad girl’s case.

He also questioned how police could reach his residence without producing a warrant, asserting that the court order was limited to attachment proceedings. Holding the administration responsible for his safety, he accused senior police officials of acting with ulterior motives and claimed he was being “constantly tortured” due to political rivalry.

Following the arrest, political temperatures in Bihar have risen sharply. Supporters of Pappu Yadav have termed the action unjust and politically driven, while reactions from major political parties are awaited. The development has once again brought the issue of law enforcement, political rivalry, and judicial process into sharp focus in the state.

Meanwhile, the police administration has maintained that the action was taken strictly in compliance with court orders. Officials said all procedures were followed as per law and that further proceedings would be carried out under judicial supervision.

As the case unfolds, the arrest is expected to have significant political repercussions in Bihar, with both legal and political narratives likely to intensify in the days ahead.
