All Necessary Action Should Be Taken Swiftly for Waste-to-Energy Project: Environment and Climate Change Minister Pankaja Munde

Mumbai, February 2026 : Environment and Climate Change Minister Pankaja Munde has directed that all obstacles related to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s waste-to-energy project be resolved at the earliest so that the project can be implemented without delay. She also instructed that the Municipal Corporation’s case be presented firmly and effectively before the Supreme Court in connection with the project, which has already received government approval.

The directions were issued during a review meeting held at the Mantralaya under the chairmanship of Minister Pankaja Munde. The meeting was attended by Secretary of the Environment and Climate Change Department Jayshree Bhoj, Deputy Secretary of the Energy Department Narayan Karad, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Deputy Commissioner Kiran Dighavkar, Joint Director of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board Jagannath Salunkhe, and officials from the Revenue and Forest Departments.

On behalf of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, work on a ‘Waste to Energy’ power generation project has been undertaken at Kanjurmarg. This project has the potential to generate approximately 8,000 megawatts of electricity. The initiative aims to scientifically process the waste generated daily in the city and convert it into energy.

It was also informed during the meeting that the Municipal Corporation is setting up another waste-to-energy project at Deonar with a capacity of 500 megawatts. This initiative is expected to play a significant role in sustainable waste management and clean energy generation for Mumbai.
