AH&Vety Minister Launches Distribution of Compensation for African Swine Fever (ASF)-Affected Pig Farmers

Aizawl, February 2026:The Minister of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary (AH&Vety) Department, C. Lalsawivunga, today formally launched the programme titled “Distribution & Launching of ASF Compensation” for farmers whose pigs were culled due to African Swine Fever (ASF). The event was held at the Minister’s Office Chamber at MINECO, Aizawl.

Addressing the occasion, the Minister stated that since ASF was first detected on March 21, 2021, at Lungsen in Lunglei district, the disease has continued to severely impact the state’s economy, with recurring incidents of pig deaths and culling every year. As per Government of India guidelines, compensation is admissible only for pigs that were culled, and is shared under a 50 percent Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) and 50 percent State Matching Share (SMS). However, during the years 2022–23 and 2023–24, the state received only 25 percent of the required funds (CSS & SMS), due to which only 25 percent compensation could be disbursed to eligible beneficiaries.

Considering the heavy losses suffered by livestock farmers, the Government of Mizoram declared ASF as a State Disaster in 2024. Under this provision, compensation for pigs that died (excluding culled animals) was also disbursed across the state at the rate of ₹4,000 per pig, with a maximum of six pigs per affected household. The Minister further informed that funds required up to the year 2025 have been proposed under the 2026–27 Action Plan, and efforts are being made to secure 100 percent funding.

The total compensation amount for pigs culled due to ASF up to the year 2024 stands at ₹1,559.34 lakh. This amount is to be jointly disbursed by the Central and State Governments through CSS and SMS. The compensation funds have already been released to the respective District Officers, and distribution to beneficiaries commenced today, February 23, 2026, either through cheques or Direct Beneficiary Transfer (DBT).

Compensation rates for pigs culled due to African Swine Fever (ASF) are as follows:

  • Below 15 kg: ₹2,200
  • 15–40 kg: ₹5,800
  • 40–70 kg: ₹8,400
  • 70–100 kg: ₹12,000
  • Above 100 kg: ₹15,000

Details regarding district-wise disbursement of ASF compensation for culled pigs will be issued separately.
