Taranjit Singh Sandhu Appointed Delhi Lieutenant Governor in Major Gubernatorial Reshuffle

New Delhi, March 2026 : In a significant administrative reshuffle, former Indian Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. The announcement was made by Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday.

Sandhu will replace the current Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, who has been serving in the post since May 26, 2022. According to the official statement, Saxena has now been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, marking a key shift in gubernatorial positions.

During his tenure in Delhi, Saxena adopted a more active and outspoken administrative role compared to many of his predecessors. His tenure saw frequent engagement with the city’s governance issues and interactions with the elected government in the national capital.

The changes in Delhi are part of a wider reshuffle involving several states. In another major development, R. N. Ravi, who previously served as the Governor of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal, replacing C. V. Ananda Bose. Bose tendered his resignation earlier in the day, which was accepted by President Droupadi Murmu, according to an official communique.

Meanwhile, retired army officer Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the new Governor of Bihar.

Sandhu brings with him more than three decades of diplomatic experience. A 1988-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, he served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from February 2020 until January 31, 2024. During his tenure in Washington, he played a key role in strengthening India–US relations during a period marked by deepening strategic cooperation between the two nations.

Earlier in his diplomatic career, Sandhu served in several significant roles across global missions. Notably, he was associated with efforts related to the opening of the Indian Embassy in Ukraine, where he headed the political and administrative wing. His career also included postings as First Secretary at the Indian Embassy in Washington, Consul General of India in Frankfurt, and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Washington D.C.

After retiring from diplomatic service, Sandhu entered politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The party fielded him as its candidate from Amritsar against Congress leader Gurjit Singh Aujla.

Sandhu completed his undergraduate studies at St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and later obtained a Master’s degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

In another related move, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, currently the Governor of Kerala, will temporarily discharge the functions of Governor of Tamil Nadu. Additionally, Kavinder Gupta has been appointed as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.

The statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan clarified that all the appointments will come into effect from the dates the newly appointed officials assume charge of their respective offices.
