PWD and Sports Ministers Attend Opening of Durtlang North Multipurpose Indoor Hall

Aizawl, March 2026:Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vanlalhlana, who is also the MLA of Aizawl North-1, attended the inauguration ceremony of the newly constructed Multipurpose Indoor Hall at Durtlang North today as the chief guest. Sports & Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar attended as the guest of honour, while Commissioner & Secretary of the Sports & Youth Services Department V. Lalsangliana conducted the programme. MLAs Jeje Lalpekhlua (South Tuipui), V. Malsawmtluanga (Lunglei North), and Lalmuanpuia Punte (Hrangturzo) were also present.

In his address, Chief Guest Vanlalhlana appreciated the initiative of the Sports & Youth Services Minister and the department for enabling the construction of the Multipurpose Indoor Hall in his constituency. He said the project reflects the government’s commitment to encouraging youth and nurturing talented sportspersons. He expressed hope that the hall would help develop Mizo youth capable of competing at national and international levels. He also said that the road leading to the hall would be improved.

The Minister further stated that many Mizo youths are falling into drug addiction, which not only harms them but also affects their families, communities, and the state as a whole. Therefore, collective efforts are necessary to combat drug abuse. He expressed hope that if more youth are engaged in sports activities, they will choose a better path instead of drugs. As PWD Minister, he also thanked engineers, technical staff, and all employees of the department for their work in improving roads across Aizawl and Mizoram.

Guest of Honour Lalnghinglova Hmar thanked the Lushai Engineers who constructed the hall and expressed hope that users would take good care of the facility. He said the hall should be utilized for various sports activities and should help produce athletes capable of winning national and international medals. He encouraged people to actively use the government initiative “Empowering Mizoram Sports” to identify and develop sporting talent among youth. He also noted that communities can invite coaches to train children in different sports disciplines.

MLA Jeje Lalpekhlua, speaking as both a legislator and a sportsman as well as a resident of Durtlang, said that besides creating good sports infrastructure, it is equally important to provide proper training from childhood. He also welcomed the government’s efforts to ensure that sports infrastructure benefits as many people as possible.

Henry C. Lalrawnkima, Secretary of the Mizoram State Sports Council, presented the technical report. The Durtlang North Multipurpose Indoor Hall was constructed under the Khelo India Scheme of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports at a project cost of ₹4.5 crore. Administrative approval was granted on November 21, 2023. After consultations with the Durtlang North Local Council, land was leased to the Mizoram State Sports Council for the project. Following the tender process, Lushai Engineers, Ramhlun, Aizawl were selected to execute the work. Construction began on March 18, 2024, and was completed on February 23, 2026.

The hall measures 46 metres in length, 20 metres in width, and 9 metres in height, with the highest point of the roof reaching 12 metres. The roof structure is made with steel truss and DYNA roofing. Spectator and VIP galleries with seating for around 200 people have been built. Facilities beneath the gallery include two players’ changing rooms, an officials’ room, a VIP rest room, a medical room, a store room, three toilets and four urinals for men, and four toilets for women.

The hall is equipped with 7-mm PVC vinyl sports flooring suitable for various indoor sports disciplines. It includes volleyball net poles and nets, and the front courtyard has PCC flooring. A Management Board has been formed to oversee the maintenance of the hall.

Leaders of the Durtlang North Local Council, YMA, MUP, MHIP, and members of the Mizoram State Sports Council were also present at the inauguration ceremony.
