India Create History with Third T20 World Cup Title, Defeat New Zealand by 96 Runs in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad, March 2026 :In a historic triumph for Indian cricket, India national cricket team became the first team to successfully defend the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title and the first nation to win the tournament three times, after defeating New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in a thrilling final at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

The emphatic victory, achieved in front of a packed crowd of 86,824 spectators, marked another landmark moment in Indian cricket history. Under the leadership of captain Suryakumar Yadav, India not only retained the prestigious trophy but also became the first host nation to lift the T20 World Cup on home soil.

Suryakumar Yadav Leads India to Glory

Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership has been a defining factor behind India’s success in the shortest format. Since taking charge as captain in July 2024, he has guided the team through an extraordinary run without losing a single series. With this victory, he became only the fourth Indian captain to lead the country to a men’s cricket World Cup title.

The triumph also helped India overcome two long-standing challenges. India had never beaten New Zealand in a Men’s T20 World Cup match before this final. Additionally, the win erased painful memories associated with Ahmedabad, where India had previously suffered two major ICC defeats – the **2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final loss to Australia national cricket team and a **Super Eight defeat to South Africa national cricket team earlier in the tournament.

Samson’s Explosive Knock Powers India

India’s commanding victory was built on a spectacular batting display led by wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson. Samson delivered one of the finest innings of the tournament, smashing 89 runs off just 46 balls, including five fours and eight towering sixes.

His aggressive approach set the tone for India’s massive total of 255 for 5 in 20 overs, the highest score recorded by any team in the tournament and the second-highest overall total of the competition.

Samson’s remarkable form throughout the tournament continued in the final. In his two previous innings, he had already scored 97 not out and 89, making him one of the standout performers of the championship.

Explosive Opening Partnership

Samson was well supported by young opener Abhishek Sharma, who played a blistering innings of 52 runs off just 21 balls. The duo shared a rapid 98-run opening partnership, putting New Zealand under immediate pressure.

Their aggressive stroke play thrilled the packed stadium, with boundaries flowing freely in the powerplay. Abhishek’s fearless hitting ensured India maintained a high scoring rate from the outset, leaving New Zealand’s bowlers struggling for answers.

The momentum continued when Ishan Kishan walked to the crease. The left-handed batter added further firepower with a quickfire 54 off 25 balls, extending India’s dominance and pushing the scoring rate even higher.

Late Surge Takes India Past 250

Although James Neesham briefly slowed India’s progress by claiming three wickets in a single over, the hosts quickly regained momentum.

All-rounder Shivam Dube delivered the finishing touch with a blistering cameo of 26 runs from just eight balls, propelling India to the formidable total of 255/5.

The target of 256 runs was always going to be a daunting task for New Zealand, especially in a high-pressure World Cup final.

Indian Bowlers Seal the Victory

India’s bowlers then produced a clinical performance to dismantle New Zealand’s batting lineup. Local heroes Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel led the charge with the ball, striking early to break the backbone of the New Zealand innings.

New Zealand’s top order collapsed under relentless pressure as they were reduced to 52 for 3 inside the powerplay. Bumrah’s pace and precision proved devastating as he finished with impressive figures of 4 for 15, while Axar Patel contributed 3 for 27.

Despite a fighting 52 from Tim Seifert and 43 from Mitchell Santner, New Zealand were unable to keep pace with the required run rate.

Eventually, the visitors were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs, handing India a comprehensive 96-run victory.
