Iranian Army Confirms 104 Killed, 32 Injured In US Strike On Frigate Dena.

Tehran; March 2026: Iran’s Army says 104 personnel on board the Frigate Dena have lost their lives during a “savage” attack by the United States in international waters. The attack was executed some hundreds of miles away from the war zone in the Persian Gulf – off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, on 04th March 2026, the Army said in an official statement today (09th March 2026) early morning (IST).

Frigate IRIS Dena was torpedoed and sunk by a US submarine. According to Sri Lanka’s deputy foreign minister, it was heading back to Iran from an eastern Indian port. The Army said the ship was returning home after participating in the “Milan 2026” naval exercise, a multinational maritime drill in India, when the US Navy carried out the attack without any advanced warning and in violation of all humanitarian laws and international maritime regulations.

A total of 136 personnel were on board the frigate, 104 of whom were martyred and 32 sailors were wounded in the attack and were transferred to a hospital in Sri Lanka. It emphasised the terrorism US has exhibited, and has inevitably violated humanitarian rules and international maritime regulations.

Frigate IRIS Dena had taken part in a naval exercise organised by India in the Bay of Bengal from February 18 to 25.

In a post on X on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi vowed that the United States will “bitterly regret” sinking Iran’s Frigate Dena. The US has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran’s shores. Frigate Dena, a guest of India’s Navy carrying almost 130 sailors, was struck in international waters without warning. Mark my words: The US will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set”, Araghchi wrote.

Going furthermore Araghchi has launched a scathing attack on the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Araghchi has once again criticised the Indian PM’s visit to Israel asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi “overlooked the genocide of Palestinians” during his recent visit to the Israeli-occupied territories because self-interest, not morality, guides India’s foreign policy under Modi.

Modi embraced Israeli regime leaders in occupied al-Quds, voiced India’s commitment to enhancing ties with the occupying regime, and addressed the Knesset to a standing ovation. During the visit, he, however, chose not to mention the death and devastation faced by Palestinians in Gaza amid the Israeli genocidal war launched in October 2023. The visit unfolded against the backdrop of widespread international outrage over the genocide, which has killed more than 72,000 Palestinians, devastated civilian infrastructure, and displaced much of the coastal territory’s population.

Moreover, the torpedoing of the Iranian War Ship has blew a hole in Narendra Modi’s guardian claims. In the month of October 2025, Indian Prime Minister dressed in a blue Navy uniform and sleek sun goggles, had addressed a gathering of the country’s sea warriors. He had listed out the strategic significance of the Indian Ocean, the massive volumes of trade and oil that pass through it. “The Indian Navy is the guardian of the Indian Ocean”, he then said, to loud, proud chants of “Long Live Mother India” from his audience.

Less than five months later, India has been shown up as a “guardian”, unable to protect its own guest.

On Wednesday, 04th March 2026, the Iranian warship, IRIS Dena, was torpedoed by a US submarine just 44 nautical miles off (81km) southern Sri Lanka, as it was returning home from naval drills hosted by India. During the “Milan” biennial multilateral naval exercise, Indian President Droupadi Murmu had posed with sailors from the Dena.

Yet it took the Indian Navy more than a day after the Iranian warship was struck to respond formally to the attack, which US officials made clear was a sign of how the Donald Trump administration was willing and ready to expand its war against Iran. “An American submarine sank an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters”, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said at the Pentagon on Wednesday. “Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo. Quiet death”.
