India Hold Scotland to 2–2 Draw in FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, March 2026 : The India women’s national field hockey team battled hard to secure a 2–2 draw against the Scotland women’s national field hockey team in their second Pool B match of the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup 2026 Qualifiers at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Stadium on Monday.

The closely contested match saw both teams share the points after an intense battle across four quarters. With the result, India and Scotland both have four points in Pool B, though India remains at the top of the group standings thanks to a superior goal difference.

India’s goals came from Navneet Kaur in the 18th minute and Sunelita Toppo in the 29th minute. Scotland, meanwhile, found the net through Heather McEwan in the sixth minute and Fiona Burnet in the 33rd minute.

Scotland started the match strongly, initiating proceedings with controlled possession and patient passing. India began in a 3-4-3 formation and initially looked composed, but a brief lapse in defensive organization allowed Scotland to win a penalty corner in the sixth minute. McEwan capitalized on the opportunity with a precise finish, giving Scotland an early 1–0 lead.

India responded with a series of attacking runs, trying to break through the Scottish defence. Lalremsiami created India’s first penalty corner opportunity, but Udita could not convert the drag-flick as the ball went wide of the goal.

India continued to press forward and earned another penalty corner in the 14th minute. However, a trapping error prevented a proper shot on goal and allowed Scotland to launch a counterattack. Fortunately for the hosts, Sushila Chanu made a timely clearance to prevent further damage, leaving India trailing 0–1 at the end of the first quarter.

India found their rhythm early in the second quarter and began dominating possession. In the 17th minute, they earned their third penalty corner. Although there was another slight error in trapping the ball, Navneet Kaur reacted quickly, positioning herself perfectly to smash the loose ball past Scottish goalkeeper Jessica Buchanan and level the score at 1–1.

Scotland tried to regain control and pushed forward aggressively, winning a penalty corner in the 22nd minute. However, India’s goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam produced a brilliant save to deny a powerful drag-flick from Amy Costello.

India seized the momentum soon after. In the 29th minute, following a chaotic goalmouth scramble from a penalty corner that saw the ball rebound off the woodwork, Sunelita Toppo showed great awareness and composure to tap the ball into the net, giving India a 2–1 lead just before halftime.

The third quarter witnessed fierce competition for possession, with both teams determined to control the tempo of the match. Scotland equalised in the 33rd minute when McEwan orchestrated a well-timed passing move that allowed Fiona Burnet to find space and score the equaliser, bringing the match level at 2–2.

After scoring, Scotland controlled the tempo for several minutes, keeping the Indian attack under pressure and limiting their forward opportunities. Eventually, India fought back, with Lalremsiami combining effectively with Rutuja Dadaso Pisal to earn another penalty corner.

This triggered a sequence of three consecutive penalty corners for India, resulting in a tense goalmouth battle. Despite several attempts, the Indian team could not convert these opportunities, leaving the score unchanged.

The final quarter saw both teams pushing hard for a decisive goal. India earned an early penalty corner, but goalkeeper Buchanan once again produced a solid save. The hosts increased their attacking intensity, launching multiple forward runs that kept the Scottish defence under constant pressure.

With five minutes remaining, Baljeet Kaur made an impressive penetrating run into the attacking circle, but there was no teammate available to finish the move. Soon after, India earned their ninth penalty corner of the match, and although the rebound fell favourably, Buchanan made another crucial save to deny the hosts.

In the closing minutes, both teams created attacking chances in an end-to-end contest, but neither side managed to find the decisive goal. The match ultimately ended in a 2–2 draw, reflecting the evenly matched performance of both teams.

India will now prepare for their next Pool B encounter against the Wales women’s national field hockey team, scheduled to take place on Wednesday at 7:30 PM IST as they continue their campaign in the tournament.
