Funds Will Not Fall Short for Transport Infrastructure Development in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad: CM Devendra Fadnavis

Mumbai, March 2026 : Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday assured the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly that there will be no shortage of funds for the development of transport infrastructure in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Hinjewadi IT hub. He said the government has already prepared a comprehensive plan to expand and strengthen the region’s transport infrastructure to address the rapidly increasing traffic in these areas.

The issue was raised in the Assembly by MLA Mahesh Landge, who sought details regarding the transport infrastructure projects in the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad region.

Responding to the question, Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal said that Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Hinjewadi form one of the most important IT and industrial hubs in Maharashtra. A large number of industries and IT companies operate in the area, including several units in the MIDC zones. Considering the rapid growth of the region and the increasing movement of people and vehicles, the state government has undertaken strategic planning for infrastructure development under the guidance of Chief Minister Fadnavis.

She informed the House that under the new infrastructure development plan, several new roads with widths of 18 metres and 24 metres are being proposed to ease traffic congestion. The projects include development works related to the National Highways Authority, the Ring Road project, Development Plan (DP) roads, internal roads, and major entry routes to the city.

Misal further stated that construction work has already begun on key stretches, including the route from Swaminarayan Temple to Bhumkar Bridge and the Navale Bridge area. The process of inviting tenders and acquiring land for additional service roads leading to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area is also currently underway.

Providing details about major infrastructure proposals, the minister said that a proposal worth approximately ₹3,660 crore has been submitted for the bridge project connecting Nere to Lavale. In addition, approval has been granted for an eight-lane bridge on the Nashik Phata to Kel route, which is expected to significantly improve connectivity and traffic movement in the region.

She also informed the Assembly that the state government will provide around ₹600 crore for land acquisition required for the Ring Road project, which is considered crucial for reducing congestion in Pune and surrounding areas.

Significant progress has also been made in the expansion of the Pune Metro network. According to the minister, work is currently underway on multiple metro corridors, including PCMC to Phugewadi, Phugewadi to District Court, District Court to Swargate, and Vanaz to Garware College. She further noted that the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro project is nearing completion, with approximately 98 per cent of the work already finished.

Misal also shared updates regarding road development in the Bhosari area. She said that land acquisition for roads in the Bhosari Gaothan area—from Nashik Phata to the RTO and the old Mumbai-Pune Road—has been completed entirely. Construction work on some stretches has already begun.

In addition, around 69 to 70 per cent of land acquisition has been completed for the proposed spiral road project in the Bhosari area, which is expected to further improve traffic flow and connectivity in the industrial zone.

To make traffic management more efficient, the government is also planning to introduce an artificial intelligence (AI)-based traffic signal system and a modern traffic management framework. These technologies are expected to help regulate traffic flow more effectively and reduce congestion across the rapidly growing urban corridor.

The minister emphasised that through these infrastructure projects and modern traffic solutions, the government aims to gradually resolve the issue of traffic congestion in Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding IT hubs.

During the discussion on the question, Assembly members Vijay Wadettiwar, Rajesh Pawar, Shankar Jagtap, Hemant Rasane, and Advocate Rahul Kul also participated and raised various concerns related to traffic infrastructure and urban development in the region.
