Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections on April 23, Results on May 4; Over 12.5 Lakh First-Time Voters to Participate
Chennai, March 2026 : The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, setting the stage for a major democratic exercise in the state. According to the poll body, voting for the state assembly will take place in a single phase on April 23, while the counting of votes and declaration of results will be carried out on May 4.
Along with the announcement of the election schedule, the commission released detailed demographic data on the state’s electorate, highlighting the diverse age groups that will participate in the polls. One of the most notable aspects of the upcoming election is the large number of first-time voters who are set to cast their ballots.
As per the figures released by the commission, around 12.51 lakh voters aged between 18 and 19 years will be voting for the first time in the state assembly elections. This significant number of young voters reflects the growing political engagement among the youth and is expected to play an important role in shaping the electoral outcome.
The voter base in the state also includes a notable number of senior citizens. According to the data, 2,530 voters in Tamil Nadu are aged 100 years or above, demonstrating remarkable participation by centenarians in the democratic process. Additionally, nearly four lakh voters fall within the age group of 85 to 100 years, indicating strong representation of elderly citizens in the electoral roll.
The data further reveals that approximately 4.63 lakh voters with disabilities are registered in the state, highlighting the Election Commission’s efforts to ensure inclusive participation in the democratic process. Special arrangements are being made to facilitate easy access to polling stations for these voters so that they can exercise their right to vote without difficulty.
A significant portion of the electorate also belongs to the youth category. The commission noted that a large segment of voters falls within the 20–29 age group, reflecting the strong presence of young voters in the electoral landscape. Their participation is expected to influence the political discourse and priorities during the campaign period.
The Election Commission recently announced the election schedule not only for Tamil Nadu but also for several other states and a union territory. While Tamil Nadu will vote in a single phase on April 23, elections in West Bengal will be conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29. Meanwhile, voters in Kerala, Assam and the union territory of Puducherry will cast their votes on April 9.
The poll body has also identified 67,056 service voters in Tamil Nadu. This category includes members of the armed forces as well as government employees who are posted outside their home constituencies but remain eligible to vote.
To ensure smooth conduct of the election process, authorities are preparing a total of 75,032 polling stations across the state. These polling booths are being equipped with the necessary infrastructure and facilities to ensure accessibility and convenience for all categories of voters, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
With the election date approaching, political parties across Tamil Nadu have intensified their campaign activities. Leaders and candidates are actively reaching out to voters in an effort to gain support ahead of polling day.
From first-time voters to centenarians, the wide demographic spread of the electorate reflects the inclusive nature of the democratic process in Tamil Nadu. With participation expected from various sections of society, the upcoming assembly election is likely to be one of the most closely watched political contests in the state.
