Congress Announces Fresh Assam Candidates, Leaves Key Seats for Ally Raijor Dal

New Delhi, March 2026 : The Indian National Congress on Friday released another list of candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, naming nominees across several important constituencies while leaving a number of seats for its ally, Raijor Dal, as part of a broader opposition strategy.

In an official statement, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal said that the party’s Central Election Committee has finalised candidates for constituencies spread across Upper Assam, the North Bank, and Barak Valley regions.

Among the key candidates announced, Bidisha Neog will contest from Jalukbari, while Rohit Pariga has been fielded from Tangla. Jayanta Borah will represent the party from Biswanath. In the reserved Nowboicha (SC) seat, Joy Prakash Das has been nominated, while Gyandip Mohan will contest from Mahmora. The party has also chosen Pran Kurmi for Titabor. In the Barak Valley region, Rahul Roy has been selected as the candidate from Hailakandi, highlighting Congress’s focus on strengthening its presence in southern Assam.

At the same time, the party has left several constituencies—including Manas, Dalgaon, Dhing, Kaliabor, Tezpur, Sissibargaon, Margherita, Digboi, Sibsagar, Mariani, and Bokakhat—for Raijor Dal under a seat-sharing arrangement. This move is seen as part of a calculated effort to consolidate anti-BJP votes and prevent fragmentation of the opposition base.

Political observers believe the Congress is trying to strike a balance between fielding strong local faces and accommodating alliance partners to maximise electoral gains. The latest list follows earlier announcements as the party steps up preparations to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party in the state.

With nominations progressing and campaigning expected to intensify soon, the Assam elections are shaping up to be highly competitive. Multi-cornered contests across constituencies, combined with evolving alliances, are likely to play a decisive role in determining the final outcome.
