Panic Buying Triggers Fuel Rush in Hyderabad Despite Assurances of Adequate Supply

Hyderabad, March 2026 : Several petrol pumps across Hyderabad witnessed temporary closures and heavy rush on Tuesday, as panic buying driven by rumours led to long queues, even though authorities reiterated that there is no shortage of fuel or LPG in the state.

“No stock” signs were put up at multiple fuel stations in areas such as Uppal, Mallapur, Ghatkesar, Attapur, Katedan, and Chandrayangutta, leaving motorists scrambling for refuelling options. At outlets that remained operational, long lines of cars, bikes, and autorickshaws were seen stretching onto roads, causing inconvenience and delays.

The situation was particularly severe at CNG stations, where commuters reportedly waited up to four to five hours to refuel. The surge in vehicles also led to traffic congestion in several parts of the city. In Nampally, queues of autorickshaws at a CNG outlet disrupted traffic flow, prompting police to issue advisories. According to traffic officials, movement slowed significantly near Nampally T Junction and towards Public Garden Road, with commuters urged to take alternate routes.

Amid growing concern, the Consumer Affairs, Food and Civil Supplies Department of Telangana issued a clear statement denying any shortage of petrol, diesel, or domestic LPG. Officials emphasised that the supply chain—from refineries to local depots—is functioning smoothly and that sufficient stock is available to meet daily demand across all districts.

Authorities attributed the disruption to sudden and unwarranted panic buying triggered by unverified rumours. They explained that when consumers rush to top up fuel tanks unnecessarily, it creates an artificial shortage at retail outlets, even though supply at the depot level remains stable.

The department also pointed to minor logistical adjustments due to recent administrative changes by Oil Marketing Companies, particularly related to advance payment systems. Officials clarified that these changes are internal and have no impact on fuel availability.

To prevent further disruption, both Central and State governments are closely monitoring the situation in coordination with Oil Marketing Companies and law enforcement agencies. Officials warned that strict action will be taken against hoarding, black marketing, or misuse of domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes.

Authorities appealed to citizens to remain calm and avoid panic-driven behaviour. Residents have been advised to rely only on official information and refrain from spreading unverified messages on social media. A toll-free helpline (1967) has also been made available for public assistance and reporting irregularities.

Meanwhile, V. C. Sajjanar reassured citizens that there is no disruption in fuel supply within the city. In a public message, he stated that adequate stocks are available and distribution is proceeding normally.

He urged people not to rush to fuel stations unnecessarily, warning that such actions could worsen congestion and disrupt public order. “The police are closely monitoring the situation in coordination with all concerned departments. Citizens are requested to remain calm and cooperate to maintain normalcy,” he said.

Despite official assurances, the scenes across Hyderabad highlight how quickly rumours can impact public behaviour, underscoring the need for accurate information and restraint during such situations.
