Grand Inauguration of Khelo India Tribal Games 2026: A Mega Celebration of Tribal Sporting Talent in Chhattisgarh

Raipur, March 2026: A historic moment unfolded in Chhattisgarh as the country’s first-ever Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 was inaugurated with great grandeur at the Science College Ground in Raipur. The mega sporting event marks a significant step toward promoting tribal talent and strengthening India’s sporting ecosystem at the grassroots level.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai officially declared the opening of the national event, reaffirming the state government’s strong commitment to nurturing sports talent and enhancing sports infrastructure. Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, attended the ceremony as the chief guest, adding further prestige to the occasion.

The games are being held from March 25 to April 3 across Raipur, Bastar, and Surguja, transforming these regions into vibrant centres of national sporting convergence. Around 2,500 athletes from 30 states and Union Territories are participating in nine different sporting disciplines, showcasing the immense potential of tribal youth from across the country.

The presence of Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey and Olympic medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu added distinction to the event, inspiring participants and highlighting the importance of such initiatives.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Sai described the event as a matter of pride for Chhattisgarh, noting that hosting the first edition of the Tribal Games in the land associated with Lord Ram holds special significance. He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Mandaviya on behalf of the state’s citizens.

He emphasized that continuous efforts are being made to identify and nurture sports talent in the state. Participation of over four lakh people in the Bastar Olympics and over 3.5 lakh in the Surguja Olympics reflects the deep-rooted interest in sports within tribal communities. He also highlighted that surrendered Naxalites are rejoining mainstream society through initiatives like “Nuabhat,” symbolising positive change and trust.

Under the state’s “Mukhyamantri Khel Utkarsh Mission,” a provision of ₹100 crore has been made for developing sports infrastructure and identifying talent. Residential academies under the Khelo India initiative are already operational in Raipur and Bilaspur, while integrated sports complexes are being developed in Jashpur, Raigarh, and Raipur.

To encourage excellence, the government has announced cash incentives of ₹21 lakh for Olympic qualifiers, ₹3 crore for gold medalists, ₹2 crore for silver medalists, and ₹1 crore for bronze medalists.

Union Minister Mandaviya termed the launch of the Tribal Games from Chhattisgarh as historic and said the initiative would continue in the coming years. He underlined that sports are not just about winning medals but about building a balanced lifestyle, adding that initiatives like Fit India and Khelo India are transforming the country’s sports culture.

The event also celebrates tribal heritage and pride, with leaders highlighting the contributions of tribal heroes and encouraging athletes to explore the rich cultural legacy of the region.

With enthusiastic participation and strong institutional support, the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026 is set to become a landmark event in India’s sporting journey, offering tribal athletes a national platform to shine and excel.
