Gujarat Titans Aim for Consistent Big Totals Ahead of IPL 2026, Says Shubman Gill

Ahmedabad, March 2026: As the Indian Premier League 2026 season approaches, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has outlined a clear and pragmatic strategy for his team—focus on consistency rather than chasing extraordinary milestones. With the tournament set to begin on March 28, the 2022 champions are aiming to re-establish themselves as title contenders by adapting to varied match situations and conditions.

Speaking at a pre-season press conference, Gill emphasized that the ultimate objective in cricket remains simple: scoring more runs than the opposition. He clarified that the team is not obsessed with chasing record-breaking totals like 300 or 350 in a single innings. Instead, Gujarat Titans aim to consistently post competitive scores based on match conditions and pitch behavior.

Gill stressed the importance of adaptability, noting that the team does not want to be dependent solely on batting-friendly surfaces. “We want to win matches in different conditions,” he said, underlining the need for balance and flexibility in approach. This mindset reflects a shift from flamboyance to reliability, ensuring that the team remains competitive regardless of venue or circumstances.

Gujarat Titans will kick off their IPL 2026 campaign against Punjab Kings on March 31 in Mullanpur. The fixture is expected to test their preparations early, especially against a side that finished as runners-up last season.

Head coach Ashish Nehra echoed Gill’s views, backing the captain’s emphasis on all-condition performance. Nehra highlighted that the team’s ambition is to succeed both at home and away, regardless of pitch conditions or match scenarios. His support reinforces the team’s commitment to building a well-rounded unit capable of handling pressure situations.

Since their debut in 2022, Gujarat Titans have established themselves as one of the most consistent teams in the league. They clinched the title in their inaugural season and finished as runners-up in 2023, while also reaching the playoffs in three of their four seasons. This track record has set high expectations, but it has also brought scrutiny—particularly regarding the team’s middle-order batting.

Addressing criticism about over-reliance on the top order, Nehra defended the contributions of players beyond the top three. With Gill, Sai Sudharsan, and Jos Buttler often anchoring innings deep into the final overs, the middle order has had limited opportunities to showcase their abilities. Nehra pointed out that this scenario, while beneficial for the team’s overall performance, can create a misleading perception about the effectiveness of the lower-order batters.

He explained that finishing roles in T20 cricket are inherently challenging, especially when players are required to deliver under intense pressure with minimal time at the crease. Citing players like Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, and Sherfane Rutherford, Nehra maintained that the middle order has fulfilled its responsibilities when called upon.

The coach also noted that occasional failures in closing out matches are part of the game, particularly when facing world-class bowlers in the death overs. Despite a disappointing finish in the previous season, he believes the team’s core structure remains strong.

With a balanced squad and a clear strategic direction, Gujarat Titans head into IPL 2026 with renewed focus. Their emphasis on consistency, adaptability, and team cohesion could prove crucial as they aim to lift the trophy once again in one of the most competitive T20 leagues in the world.
