No Lockdown Planned in India, Says Hardeep Singh Puri Amid Rumours

New Delhi, March 2026: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday firmly dismissed rumours of a nationwide lockdown, clarifying that the government is not considering any such proposal. His statement comes amid growing speculation fueled by global uncertainties and concerns over energy supplies.

Taking to the social media platform X, Puri assured citizens that the government is closely monitoring the evolving global situation, particularly in areas such as energy, supply chains, and essential commodities. He emphasised that under the leadership of Narendra Modi, all necessary steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted availability of fuel, energy, and other critical resources across the country.

“The global situation remains in flux, but we are fully prepared to handle emerging challenges,” Puri said, adding that India has consistently shown resilience in dealing with international crises. He stressed that the government continues to act in a timely, proactive, and coordinated manner to safeguard national interests.

Addressing the rumours directly, the minister stated unequivocally that there is no plan to impose a lockdown in India. He urged citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. “Rumours of a lockdown in India are completely false. There is no such proposal under consideration by the Government of India,” he said, warning that attempts to create panic during sensitive times are irresponsible and harmful.

The clarification comes against the backdrop of rising global tensions, particularly in West Asia, which have led to disruptions in oil and gas supplies. These developments have triggered concerns about potential shortages, including of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), prompting speculation about possible restrictive measures within the country.

Earlier in the week, the government had already denied any plans for a nationwide lockdown, stating that there would be no restrictions on public movement or economic activities. Officials noted that recent comments by the Prime Minister regarding “preparedness” had been widely misinterpreted.

The confusion stemmed from references made in Parliament, where Modi spoke about readiness in the context of global geopolitical tensions and their possible economic impact. Authorities clarified that this “preparedness” refers to administrative readiness and contingency planning, rather than any form of stay-at-home orders or mobility curbs.

The spread of rumours was further amplified by the timing, coinciding with the sixth anniversary of the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, which led to heightened sensitivity among the public. However, the government reiterated that there is no cause for concern.

With clear assurances from the Centre, officials continue to emphasise that India’s supply systems remain stable and that there is no immediate threat requiring drastic measures like a lockdown.
