Bangladesh Floods: Government and Relief Agencies Intensify Efforts as Death Toll Rises

In a press conference on Saturday, Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Kamrul Hasan provided an update on the ongoing flood crisis in Bangladesh. He reported that the rainfall over the eastern parts of the country is gradually decreasing, and the situation is expected to improve within the next 24 hours. The floods, which have severely impacted 12 districts, have caused significant damage and loss of life, with the death toll now rising to 18. The disaster has affected approximately 4.94 million people, with around 944,000 residents in 11 flood-affected districts experiencing severe waterlogging.

Kamrul Hasan also highlighted the relief efforts underway, noting that around Tk 35.2 million in cash, along with Tk 3.5 million each for baby food and cattle feed, has been distributed among the flood-affected areas. Additionally, 20,150 tonnes of rice and 15,000 packets of dry food have been provided as part of the relief work. To address the immediate health needs of the affected population, a total of 770 medical teams have been deployed, and a field hospital has been established in Feni. The government is also taking proactive measures to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases as the floodwaters recede.

The floods have also caused significant displacement, with approximately 8 lakh people losing their homes. Relief efforts are being bolstered by the Bangladesh Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Border Guards, Fire Service, Police, and various NGOs. These groups are working tirelessly to evacuate people from flood-affected areas, with nearly 1.9 lakh individuals already relocated to safer locations where they are receiving food, water, and other essential supplies.

In addition to the humanitarian crisis, the floods have exacerbated an already challenging economic situation for Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus. The rising river levels in the affected districts pose further risks, and while the political crisis may be managed, addressing the economic fallout from the floods will prove much more difficult.

Despite the grim circumstances, Kamrul Hasan emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the flood victims and ensuring that relief and medical services reach those in need. As the nation grapples with this disaster, coordinated efforts between government agencies and NGOs are crucial in mitigating the impact and assisting the millions affected by the floods.
