KKR Opt to Bat First Against Punjab Kings in IPL 2026 Clash

Kolkata, April 2026 : Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won the toss and elected to bat against Punjab Kings in the 12th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the iconic Eden Gardens on Monday.

KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane explained his decision, citing favourable pitch conditions. He observed that the surface appeared slightly dry with minimal grass cover, making it ideal for batting first. Rahane stressed the importance of confidence and capitalising on crucial moments during the game, noting that maintaining belief and executing plans effectively would be key to success.

However, KKR were forced to make two changes to their playing XI. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy was ruled out due to injury, while all-rounder Sunil Narine missed the match due to illness. In their place, pacer Navdeep Saini and explosive batter Rovman Powell were drafted into the side.

Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer said he was content with the outcome of the toss, indicating that he would have opted to bowl as well. Iyer also took a moment to praise Rahane, highlighting his leadership qualities and the confidence he instills in younger players. He described Rahane as an inspiration and one of the finest cricketers, adding that sharing the field with him was a special experience.

The match features strong line-ups on both sides. Punjab Kings have fielded a balanced combination, including key players like Prabhsimran Singh, Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, and spin ace Yuzvendra Chahal.

KKR, on the other hand, will rely on the likes of Finn Allen, Cameron Green, Rinku Singh, and Kartik Tyagi to deliver a strong performance.

With both teams looking to gain momentum in the tournament, the contest promises to be an exciting encounter. The batting-friendly conditions at Eden Gardens could set the stage for a high-scoring match, putting pressure on bowlers to deliver disciplined performances.
