Gill, Buttler Star as Gujarat Titans Cruise to Seven-Wicket Win Over Lucknow Super Giants

Lucknow, April 2026 : A commanding all-round performance led by Prasidh Krishna, followed by authoritative batting displays from Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler, powered Gujarat Titans to a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants in their Indian Premier League 2026 clash at the Ekana Stadium on Sunday.

Chasing a competitive target of 165, Gujarat Titans displayed composure and class, reaching 165/3 in just 18.4 overs. The chase was anchored by a dominant second-wicket partnership and finished off with ease, underlining the visitors’ superiority on the day.

The Titans began steadily, with Gill and Sai Sudharsan laying a solid foundation. Though Sudharsan departed early for 15, dismissed by Digvesh Rathi, Gujarat maintained momentum to post 52/1 at the end of the powerplay. That early platform proved crucial as it allowed the middle order to dictate terms without pressure.

From there, Gill took charge of the innings with a blend of elegance and aggression. The skipper timed the ball beautifully and punished anything loose. A pivotal moment came when he attacked Mohammed Shami for a 20-run over, decisively shifting momentum in Gujarat’s favour. Gill brought up a fluent half-century off 34 balls and went on to score 56 off 40 deliveries before falling to Prince Yadav.

At the other end, Buttler grew in confidence after a cautious start and soon unleashed a flurry of boundaries. He was particularly harsh on Avesh Khan, smashing three consecutive fours in a single over. Buttler reached his landmark 100th T20 half-century in just 34 balls and finished with a match-winning 60 off 37 deliveries, decorated with 11 boundaries.

The partnership between Gill and Buttler ensured that the required run rate never spiralled out of control. By the 14th over, Gujarat had raced to 128/1, effectively sealing the outcome. Though Lucknow managed to claim the wickets of both set batters in quick succession, the damage had already been done.

In the closing stages, Rahul Tewatia and Washington Sundar calmly guided the team home. Sundar remained unbeaten on 21 off 13 balls and fittingly sealed the victory with a six, ensuring a smooth finish for the Titans.

Earlier, Gujarat’s bowlers had laid the foundation for victory with a disciplined performance to restrict Lucknow to 164/8. After being asked to bat first, Lucknow got off to a brisk start, reaching 60/2 in the powerplay. Aiden Markram anchored the innings with a steady 30 off 21 balls, but the middle order failed to capitalise.

Nicholas Pooran (19 off 21) and Abdul Samad (18 off 22) struggled to accelerate, allowing Gujarat to tighten their grip. The turning point came through Prasidh Krishna, who delivered a superb spell of 4/28, consistently troubling the batters with his variations and short-pitched deliveries.

Lucknow’s innings lost momentum during the middle overs as wickets fell at regular intervals. However, a late surge from Mukul Choudhary (18), George Linde (16 off 10), and a quick cameo from Shami lifted the total past 160, with 18 runs coming in the final over.

In addition to Prasidh’s brilliance, Mohammed Siraj and Ashok Sharma chipped in with crucial wickets, ensuring that Lucknow never built sustained partnerships.

The match also marked a significant milestone for Shubman Gill, who became the youngest player to cross 4,000 runs in IPL history. He achieved the feat in just 118 innings, becoming the second-fastest Indian to reach the landmark after KL Rahul. Globally, only greats like Chris Gayle, David Warner, and Buttler himself have reached the milestone faster.

Gill’s consistency has been a defining feature of his IPL career. Since joining Gujarat Titans in 2022, he has elevated his game, emerging as one of the most dependable and prolific batters in the league. Now leading the side, he continues to set benchmarks with both his leadership and performances.

In the end, it was a complete team effort from Gujarat Titans — clinical with the ball and composed with the bat — that secured them a convincing win and strengthened their position in the tournament.

Brief Scores: Lucknow Super Giants 164/8 (Aiden Markram 30; Prasidh Krishna 4-28) lost to Gujarat Titans 165/3 (Jos Buttler 60, Shubman Gill 56) by seven wickets.
