India Ensures Safe Maritime Operations as LPG Vessel Jag Vikram Heads to Kandla
New Delhi, April 2026 : The India-flagged LPG vessel Jag Vikram has safely exited the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz and is expected to arrive at Kandla port on Tuesday, carrying approximately 20,400 metric tonnes of LPG along with 24 crew members onboard, according to an official government statement.
Authorities confirmed that all Indian seafarers operating in the region are safe, with no incidents involving Indian-flagged vessels reported in the past 24 hours. The development comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region, where maritime routes are being closely monitored.
The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) has been actively managing communication and support efforts since activating its control room. So far, the control room has handled 6,073 calls and 12,867 emails, including 20 calls and 80 emails received in the last 24 hours alone. These efforts have been crucial in addressing concerns and ensuring coordination with Indian seafarers and their families.
In addition, DG Shipping has facilitated the safe repatriation of over 2,177 Indian seafarers from various parts of the Gulf region, including 93 individuals in the past 24 hours. This reflects the government’s continued focus on safeguarding the welfare of Indian nationals working in maritime sectors abroad.
Port operations across India remain stable and unaffected, with no congestion reported at major terminals. On the western coast, ports have efficiently managed cargo movement, particularly involving West Asia-bound containers. A total of 3,383 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers have been received, out of which 3,228 TEUs have already been processed for return. The remaining 155 TEUs are pending due to routine operational factors related to shipping lines, not due to any port congestion.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways continues to work in close coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions in the Gulf, and other maritime stakeholders to ensure seamless operations and the safety of seafarers.
Indian diplomatic missions across the region remain in constant contact with the Indian community, providing assistance and issuing timely advisories. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also visited the United Arab Emirates from April 11 to 12, underlining the importance of regional engagement during this period.
The government continues to closely monitor developments in West Asia, maintaining coordination with state governments and Union Territories to ensure effective information sharing. Round-the-clock helplines and updated travel advisories are being issued regularly, focusing on the safety, security, and well-being of Indian citizens in the region.
