Delay in Rahul Gandhi’s Campaign Visit Raises Concerns in Tamil Nadu Congress Camp
Chennai, April 2026 : As the Tamil Nadu Assembly election campaign enters its crucial final phase, the delay in announcing campaign dates by senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has emerged as a growing concern for the party’s state unit as well as its key ally, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
Despite securing 28 seats after prolonged and intense negotiations with alliance partners, the Congress is yet to see its top leadership actively campaign in the state. At a time when rival parties have intensified their outreach with high-decibel campaigns, the absence of Rahul Gandhi has left several party candidates feeling disadvantaged, particularly in closely contested constituencies.
Within the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), pressure is mounting from grassroots workers and senior leaders for the participation of both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. They are widely regarded as the party’s strongest crowd-pullers, capable of energising cadres and enhancing visibility during the decisive final days of campaigning.
TNCC President K. Selvaperunthagai and other senior leaders are currently undertaking extensive statewide outreach efforts to mobilise support. However, many within the party believe that without the presence of national leaders, these efforts may fall short of delivering the desired electoral momentum.
According to party sources, Rahul Gandhi has yet to finalise his Tamil Nadu tour schedule. The delay is reportedly linked to internal differences within the state unit, which have caused some unease at the national leadership level. These organisational challenges appear to have contributed to the hesitation in committing to campaign dates.
At the same time, Congress leaders have been actively criticising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the proposed delimitation exercise scheduled between April 16 and 18. This has further highlighted that the party’s focus is currently divided between internal coordination and broader political messaging.
The delay has also sparked speculation about possible strains in ties between Rahul Gandhi and DMK President M. K. Stalin. Observers noted that although both leaders campaigned in neighbouring Puducherry on the same day recently, they did not share the stage—fueling perceptions of a lack of coordination within the alliance.
Congress leaders are particularly concerned given their reliance on the DMK’s strong organisational network for grassroots mobilisation. In such a scenario, the absence of Rahul Gandhi during the campaign’s closing stretch is seen as a potential setback.
Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar has assured that Rahul Gandhi’s campaign itinerary will be announced soon. However, with the election deadline fast approaching, the delay has heightened anxiety within the Secular Progressive Alliance, especially amid expectations of a tightly contested electoral battle.
