White House Says Iran Talks ‘Productive’ Amid Strait of Hormuz Tensions

Washington, April 2026 : The White House has said that ongoing negotiations with Iran remain “productive and ongoing,” even as tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continue to influence the pace of diplomatic engagement.

Addressing reporters, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasised that the United States is actively involved in discussions with Tehran and dismissed reports suggesting Washington had sought an extension of the current ceasefire arrangement.

“At this moment, we remain very much engaged in these negotiations,” she said, describing the talks as constructive. Leavitt noted that dialogue is taking place at multiple levels, with the possibility of in-person meetings being explored, though no formal decision has been announced.

“I’ve seen reports about potential in-person discussions. Those conversations are ongoing, but nothing is official until confirmed by the White House,” she added.

Highlighting the role of mediators, Leavitt credited Pakistan for facilitating the negotiations, calling it the sole mediator in the process. “The Pakistanis have been incredible mediators throughout this process,” she said, while noting that although other countries had shown interest, the US is focused on maintaining a streamlined channel through Islamabad.

She indicated that if the next round of talks is confirmed, it is likely to take place at the same venue as earlier discussions, ensuring continuity in the negotiation framework.

The White House struck a cautiously optimistic tone regarding the outcome of the talks. “We feel good about the prospects of a deal,” Leavitt said, while making it clear that no fixed timeline has been set for reaching an agreement.

“I will never set timelines on behalf of the president,” she said, adding that Donald Trump has clearly outlined his red lines in the negotiations.

On the security front, the administration clarified its position regarding maritime operations in the region. While a blockade targeting Iranian-linked shipping remains in effect, US forces continue to ensure freedom of navigation for vessels not associated with Iran.

“Our forces are supporting the safe passage of ships transiting to and from non-Iranian ports,” Leavitt said, adding that enforcement measures apply to vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports.

As diplomatic efforts continue, developments in the Strait of Hormuz remain a critical factor shaping both regional stability and the trajectory of US-Iran negotiations.
