Tilak Varma’s Maiden IPL Century Powers Mumbai Indians to 199/5 Against Gujarat Titans
Ahmedabad, April 2026 : India’s T20 World Cup-winning star Tilak Varma produced a sensational unbeaten century to guide Mumbai Indians (MI) to a formidable total of 199/5 against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Match 30 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday. His brilliant knock came after MI suffered early setbacks, with Kagiso Rabada striking crucial blows in the Power-play.
Opting to bat first, Mumbai Indians began cautiously with a new opening pair comprising debutant Danish Malewar and seasoned wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock. The Gujarat Titans bowlers kept things tight early on, with Mohammed Siraj conceding just two runs in the opening over. The pressure soon paid off as Rabada struck in the second over, dismissing Malewar for just 2 in his debut outing.
Rabada continued to trouble the MI top order with his pace and accuracy. De Kock, who looked to break free, was dismissed for 13 off 11 balls after a sharp caught-and-bowled effort by the South African pacer. The early wickets dented MI’s momentum, and the situation worsened when Rabada removed Suryakumar Yadav for 15, leaving the visitors struggling at 46/3 at the end of the Power-play.
Amid the collapse, Naman Dhir provided some much-needed intent with a counter-attacking approach. He struck a couple of boundaries off Siraj and looked comfortable at the crease. However, the responsibility of rebuilding the innings fell on Tilak Varma, who initially played cautiously, assessing the conditions on a slightly sluggish pitch.
The duo of Tilak and Dhir stitched together a steady partnership, rotating the strike smartly while punishing loose deliveries. Their 52-run stand brought Mumbai Indians back into the contest, taking the score to 75/3 by the halfway mark. Just when the partnership was beginning to flourish, Prasidh Krishna struck in the 13th over, dismissing Dhir for a well-made 45 off 32 balls as he was caught in the deep.
Following Dhir’s departure, Tilak Varma shifted gears brilliantly. Having settled in, he began attacking the bowlers with confidence, particularly in the middle and death overs. He took on Prasidh Krishna in a crucial over, collecting boundaries that helped MI regain momentum.
Tilak reached his half-century in 33 balls and then accelerated further, displaying an impressive range of strokes. He pierced gaps with precision and cleared the ropes with ease, putting the Gujarat bowlers under immense pressure. His composure and shot selection stood out as he anchored the innings while maintaining a high scoring rate.
In the final overs, Tilak unleashed his full attacking arsenal, dominating the bowlers and ensuring a strong finish for Mumbai Indians. He brought up his maiden IPL century in just 45 balls and remained unbeaten on 101. His innings was studded with eight boundaries and seven towering sixes, highlighting his dominance at the crease.
Despite Rabada’s excellent spell of 3/33, which included key early wickets, Gujarat Titans struggled to contain the onslaught in the latter stages. Siraj and Prasidh Krishna chipped in with a wicket each, but lacked support in restricting the flow of runs during the death overs.
Thanks to Tilak Varma’s extraordinary innings, Mumbai Indians posted a challenging total of 199/5, setting up an exciting contest for the Gujarat Titans in the chase.
