India Remembers Pahalgam Attack Victims, Reaffirms Zero Tolerance for Terrorism

New Delhi, April 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid tribute to the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack on its first anniversary, reiterating India’s unwavering resolve to combat terrorism and ensure that such acts never succeed.

Marking one year since the brutal attack that shocked the nation, the Prime Minister expressed deep condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and emphasised that the country stands united in grief and determination. In a message shared on social media, he said the innocent lives lost in the tragedy would never be forgotten and assured that India would never bow to any form of terror.

The Pahalgam attack, which occurred on April 22, 2025, remains one of the most heinous acts of violence against civilians in recent years. A total of 26 people — including 25 tourists and a local pony operator — were killed after terrorists reportedly singled out victims based on their religion. The attackers, linked to The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, carried out the massacre with chilling precision, leaving families devastated and the nation outraged.

Remembering the victims, Prime Minister Modi said, “As a nation, we stand united in grief and resolve. India will never bow to any form of terror. The heinous designs of terrorists will never succeed.” His remarks reflected the broader sentiment across the country, as citizens and leaders alike paid homage to those who lost their lives.

The Indian Army also marked the occasion with strong messaging, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the nation. In a statement shared online, the Army warned that any act against India would be met with a decisive response, asserting that justice would always be served. The post highlighted the success of Operation Mahadev, the extensive manhunt launched immediately after the attack.

Operation Mahadev involved a massive search effort across more than 300 square kilometres of difficult Himalayan terrain near the Dachigam-Mahadev Ridge. Over the course of 93 days, security forces tracked down and neutralised the three key perpetrators responsible for the massacre, demonstrating both operational capability and persistence.

In parallel, the Indian armed forces had also launched Operation Sindoor in early May 2025. This operation targeted high-value terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Officials described it as a calibrated and non-escalatory response aimed at dismantling terror networks while avoiding broader conflict.

The aftermath of the operation saw heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, including drone incursions and cross-border shelling. India responded firmly to these provocations, including strikes on key installations. Eventually, a ceasefire understanding was reached on May 10, 2025, after Pakistan’s military leadership initiated contact to de-escalate the situation.

Despite the ceasefire, sporadic attempts to breach Indian airspace using drones continued, but were successfully intercepted by Indian forces. Field commanders were granted authority to respond decisively to any violations, reinforcing India’s vigilant security posture.

The Pahalgam attack also underscored the evolving nature of terrorism, with civilians increasingly being targeted to create fear and division. However, India’s response — both militarily and diplomatically — has been framed around a policy of zero tolerance, combining strategic restraint with firm retaliation when necessary.

As the nation observes the anniversary, the memory of the victims continues to serve as a reminder of the human cost of terrorism and the importance of unity in confronting it. The government and armed forces have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice for the victims while preventing future attacks.

The solemn occasion not only honours those who lost their lives but also reinforces India’s enduring message: that terrorism will be met with resolve, resilience, and an unyielding commitment to national security.
