Revanth Reddy Orders Parliament-Style Revamp of Telangana Assembly, Stresses Heritage Preservation

Hyderabad, April 2026 : Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday directed officials to undertake a comprehensive renovation of the state Legislative Assembly complex on the lines of the Indian Parliament, with a focus on enhancing dignity, functionality, and modern amenities while preserving its historic character.

The directive came during a high-level review meeting attended by Legislative Council Chairman Gutha Sukender Reddy and Assembly Speaker G. Prasad Kumar. The Chief Minister emphasised that the Assembly must reflect the stature of a premier democratic institution and provide an environment befitting legislative proceedings.

According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Revanth Reddy instructed officials to redesign the Assembly to ensure improved privacy and decorum for members during sessions. He specifically asked that the Central Hall be completed and made operational before the next Assembly session, underlining its importance as a key space for discussions and interactions.

In addition to structural upgrades, the Chief Minister proposed the development of a dedicated members’ club within the Public Gardens adjoining the Assembly premises. The plan also includes the creation of new amenities such as a walking track and sports facilities to support the well-being of legislators.

At the same time, Revanth Reddy stressed the need for strict preservation of the heritage buildings within the Assembly complex. He directed officials to ensure that renovation work does not damage the existing structures, many of which hold significant historical and architectural value. The old Assembly and Council buildings, he noted, must be protected as symbols of the state’s legislative legacy.

The Chief Minister also called for a substantial strengthening of security infrastructure across the Assembly complex to ensure the safety of members and staff. Enhanced surveillance and modern security systems are expected to be part of the upgrade.

The push for renovation follows the recent restoration of the Legislative Council building, which the Chief Minister inaugurated last month. The old Assembly building, an example of Indo-Saracenic architecture dating back to the Nizam era, has now been repurposed to house the Telangana Legislative Council.

Historically, the building served as the Assembly during the Hyderabad princely state and later continued in use after the formation of Andhra Pradesh in 1956. However, after the inauguration of a new Assembly building in 1985, it gradually fell into disuse.

Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the structure was allocated to the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. After the state shifted its capital to Amaravati, the building was returned to Telangana but remained neglected for some time, slipping into a dilapidated condition.

After assuming office in 2023, the Congress-led government under Revanth Reddy initiated restoration efforts, investing around Rs 30 crore over 18 months to revive the heritage structure. The renovated building now serves as the Legislative Council, marking a significant step in preserving the state’s institutional history.

With the proposed Parliament-style revamp, the Telangana government aims to blend modern infrastructure with heritage conservation, ensuring that the Assembly complex evolves into a world-class legislative space while retaining its historical essence.
