Strong Social Security System for Senior Citizens in Chhattisgarh
Effective Initiatives Towards Dignity, Security and Self-Reliance
Raipur, April 2026 : The Government of Chhattisgarh is giving top priority to the dignity, security, and overall well-being of senior citizens. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the state has developed a strong and sensitive social security system for the elderly. Guided by Social Welfare Minister Lakshmi Rajwade, departmental schemes are being effectively implemented on the ground, empowering senior citizens economically, socially, and emotionally.
Simple Process, Easy Access
Senior citizens in the state do not require a separate “Senior Citizen Card” to avail benefits. Eligibility and age are verified through Aadhaar and other valid documents, ensuring a transparent, simple, and accessible process.
Old Age Homes: Foundation of a Dignified Life
A total of 27 old age homes operating across various districts, including the capital Raipur, have emerged as safe shelters for destitute and helpless elderly citizens. Currently, 675 senior citizens are benefiting from these facilities. Free accommodation, nutritious food, clothing, and other essential services are provided regularly, enabling them to live with dignity.
Palliative Care Homes: Specialised Support
For seriously ill and bedridden elderly citizens, 13 palliative care homes are operational in the state. At present, 140 senior citizens are benefiting in districts such as Raipur, Kabirdham, Durg, Balod, Raigarh, and Bemetara. These centres offer continuous care, medical support, and essential services, ensuring a humane and dignified life even in critical conditions.
Old Age Pension: Financial Support
Under the social security system, eligible senior citizens receive regular pensions. Elderly individuals belonging to BPL and SECC deprived categories are provided Rs 500 per month, while those above 80 years of age receive Rs 680 per month. This financial assistance strengthens their independence and self-respect in daily life.
Assistive Devices and Pilgrimage: Renewed Energy
Under the Assistive Devices Distribution Scheme, elderly citizens aged 60 years and above, living below the poverty line and without support, are provided necessary aids as per their needs. Based on medical advice, assistive devices worth up to Rs 6,900—such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, canes, hearing aids, spectacles, and tricycles—are distributed to make their lives easier.
Additionally, through a pilgrimage scheme covering 19 major religious sites, senior citizens are given opportunities for spiritual and mental well-being, bringing renewed energy into their lives. In the financial year 2025–26, a total of 10,694 beneficiaries availed the scheme through 14 यात्राएँ (journeys).
Continuous Efforts for Holistic Welfare
The state government’s objective is not limited to providing assistance but also to encourage senior citizens to actively participate in mainstream society. Through pensions, healthcare, housing, assistive services, and social engagement, Chhattisgarh is establishing a strong, compassionate, and comprehensive social security system for its elderly population.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Minister Lakshmi Rajwade, these efforts will continue to grow stronger, ensuring a more dignified and secure life for senior citizens in the years to come.
