No Change Planned in Aadhaar Format, Government Calls Reports Misleading
New Delhi, May 2026 : The government on Sunday dismissed circulating reports suggesting a major redesign of Aadhaar cards, clarifying that there is no proposal to simplify the document into a format containing only a photograph and QR code.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology termed such claims incorrect and misleading, stating that they have led to unnecessary confusion among citizens.
“There are intermittent news reports and social media posts claiming that Aadhaar’s look may change by the end of this year to just a photo and a QR code. This is not correct. There is no plan for any such changes,” the ministry said, firmly rejecting the speculation.
The ministry emphasized that misinformation circulating online and in certain media reports is creating unwarranted concern among the public. It urged people to rely only on verified and official sources for accurate information regarding Aadhaar-related matters.
Citizens have been advised to follow updates and announcements issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) through its official communication channels and press releases disseminated by the Press Information Bureau (PIB). The ministry also appealed to media organisations to exercise caution and avoid amplifying unverified or speculative information.
“People are advised to ignore such reports and refer only to official communication from UIDAI. Media outlets should also refrain from encouraging or spreading unverified claims,” the statement added.
The clarification comes amid widespread online discussions and claims that Aadhaar could soon undergo a significant visual overhaul. The government reiterated that no such decision has been taken and urged the public not to be misled by rumours.
The issue holds particular importance given Aadhaar’s scale and role in India’s digital ecosystem. Recognised as the world’s largest biometric identification system, Aadhaar currently serves approximately 134 crore residents across the country.
According to official data, the Aadhaar system has facilitated more than 17,000 crore authentication transactions, underscoring its central role in identity verification for a wide range of services, including banking, welfare schemes, and digital governance.
Maintained by UIDAI, Aadhaar continues to be a cornerstone of India’s digital infrastructure, and the government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring its stability, reliability, and security without any immediate changes to its existing format.
