Kerala Poll Shock: Majority of Left Democratic Front Cabinet Defeated in Major Electoral Upset
Thiruvananthapuram, May 2026 : In a dramatic electoral setback, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) has suffered a massive blow in the Kerala Assembly elections, with a majority of ministers from the outgoing Cabinet led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan losing their seats. The outcome signals a clear shift in voter sentiment and marks one of the most significant reversals for an incumbent government in the state’s recent political history.
Out of the 21-member Cabinet, 20 ministers had contested the elections, and as many as 13 of them were defeated. This scale of loss within the ruling establishment highlights a widespread erosion of support for the government across constituencies.
Even as the final results are yet to be formally declared by the Election Commission, early trends show the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) surging ahead with 102 seats, while the LDF trails with around 35 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made marginal gains, securing three seats.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan managed to retain his seat, but not without a noticeable dip in his victory margin. Having won by over 50,000 votes in 2021, he faced a much tougher contest this time, trailing until the sixth round of counting before eventually securing a reduced margin of approximately 19,400 votes. The narrower win is being interpreted as a reflection of changing public mood.
Among those who managed to hold their ground were key ministers such as Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal, Tourism Minister P.A. Mohammed Riyas, and Fisheries Minister Saji Cherian from the CPI(M). From allied parties, Revenue Minister K. Rajan, Food Minister G.R. Anil, and Agriculture Minister P.P. Prasad also retained their seats.
However, several prominent faces in the Cabinet suffered defeats. Senior CPI(M) leaders including Veena George, V.N. Vasavan, R. Bindu, M.B. Rajesh, O.R. Kelu, V. Sivankutty, and P. Rajeeve failed to secure re-election. The losses extended to allies as well, with ministers such as J. Chinchurani, Kadanapally Ramachandran, Roshy Augustine, K.B. Ganesh Kumar, A.K. Saseendran, and V. Abdurahiman also losing their contests.
Interestingly, some former CPI(M) stalwarts who had distanced themselves from the current leadership—such as G. Sudhakaran, T.K. Govindan, and V. Kunjikrishnan—registered comfortable victories in traditional Left strongholds. Their success points to an internal churn within the party’s support base.
Overall, the election results indicate a strong voter backlash against the incumbent government, with the scale of ministerial defeats emerging as a defining feature of this electoral verdict and reshaping Kerala’s political landscape.
