MI Opt to Bowl Under Suryakumar’s Leadership as LSG Ring in Changes
Mumbai, May 2026 : The Mumbai Indians (MI), led by stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav, won the toss and elected to bowl first against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in Match 47 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on Monday.
Regular skipper Hardik Pandya was ruled out of the clash due to a back spasm, handing leadership responsibilities to Suryakumar, India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain. At the toss, Suryakumar expressed confidence in his team despite recent setbacks and highlighted a couple of key changes in the playing XI.
Opting to bowl first, Suryakumar cited favourable pitch conditions and humid weather as factors behind the decision. “The surface looks good, and there’s a bit of humidity around. Hardik isn’t fit tonight, so I’ll step in. We’ve made a few changes, including bringing in Corbin Bosch,” he said.
South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch replaced Trent Boult in the lineup, while veteran opener Rohit Sharma returned to the squad after recovering from injury, although he was named on the Impact Bench. Suryakumar also acknowledged MI’s recent struggles but maintained a positive outlook. “We may not be used to being in this position, but it’s about showing character and enjoying the game,” he added.
On the other side, LSG captain Rishabh Pant also made notable changes to his team. Australian wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis was handed his debut, while Mukul Choudhary was left out in favour of Akshat Raghuwanshi. Pant said the team aimed to reset mentally after a tough run.
“The break gave us time to regroup. Our focus is to bring positivity back into the camp,” Pant remarked, adding that the bowling strategy would be decided based on match conditions.
Both teams entered the contest under pressure, struggling to find consistent form. MI had lost four of their last five matches, while LSG were also reeling from a string of defeats, making this encounter crucial for both sides in keeping their playoff hopes alive.
