Who Will BJP Choose as Chief Minister in Bengal?
Kolkata, May 2026 : The question of who will be appointed Chief Minister in West Bengal has become a major talking point following the election results. Several prominent leaders within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are being seen as strong contenders for the top post. Here’s a look at the leading names in the race:
Suvendu Adhikari:
Suvendu Adhikari is among the frontrunners for the Chief Minister’s position. Once a close associate of Mamata Banerjee, he has a strong grassroots presence and an extensive organisational network. In 2021, he earned the title of “giant killer” after defeating Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency. However, his alleged involvement in the Narada sting case could pose a challenge to his elevation as Chief Minister.
Dilip Ghosh:
Former state BJP president Dilip Ghosh is credited with transforming the party into a formidable force in West Bengal, particularly by establishing it as the principal opposition in 2021. Although he no longer holds the top organisational post, his influence in state politics remains significant, making him a strong contender for the chief Minister role.
Samik Bhattacharya:
Current Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya is regarded as a leader who can bring different factions together. Known for his behind-the-scenes role in expanding the party’s presence in the state, he is considered a consensus candidate who could be entrusted with leading the government.
Agnimitra Paul:
Agnimitra Paul, a fashion designer by profession, is one of the BJP’s outspoken leaders. She successfully retained her Asansol South seat in the elections. If the party opts to appoint a woman as Chief Minister, she could emerge as a strong choice.
Roopa Ganguly:
Former Rajya Sabha MP and MLA from Sonarpur South, Roopa Ganguly has significant grassroots experience, having served as president of the BJP’s Mahila Morcha. Her popularity and organisational work make her another viable candidate for the top post.
Nisith Pramanik:
Nisith Pramanik’s name has also surfaced in discussions around the Chief Ministerial race. Though not the most prominent contender, he remains part of the broader leadership pool being considered.
Ultimately, the decision will rest with the BJP’s central leadership, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. It remains to be seen who will be chosen to lead the party and shape the future political direction of West Bengal.
