Vote Share Trends Reveal Shifting Political Ground Across Five Key States

May 2026 : The Assembly elections across five major regions—West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry—have not only produced decisive electoral outcomes but also revealed deeper shifts in voter sentiment when examined through vote share patterns. Beyond seat counts, the percentage of votes secured by parties offers a more nuanced understanding of the evolving political landscape.

In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a landmark victory, securing 45.84 percent of the vote and ending the long-standing dominance of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), which followed with 40.80 percent. The nearly five-percentage-point lead proved decisive, translating into a clear legislative majority and marking a significant political shift in the state.

A similar trend of consolidation was visible in Assam, where the BJP retained power for a third consecutive term with a vote share of 37.81 percent. The Indian National Congress (INC), despite securing a substantial 29.84 percent, remained well behind, underscoring the BJP’s continued dominance in the state’s political landscape.

Tamil Nadu, however, emerged as the epicentre of political disruption. The newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by C. Joseph Vijay, made a remarkable debut by capturing 34.92 percent of the vote. This surge pushed the state into a highly competitive, multi-cornered contest. Established Dravidian parties saw their traditional vote bases erode, with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) securing 24.19 percent and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) close behind at 21.21 percent. The fragmentation of votes indicates a significant reconfiguration of Tamil Nadu’s political order.

In Kerala, the electorate appeared to follow its long-standing pattern of alternating governments. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a clear mandate, anchored by the Congress party’s 28.79 percent vote share. The Communist Party of India (Marxist), the leading force in the outgoing Left Democratic Front (LDF), garnered 21.77 percent, reflecting a competitive yet decisive shift in voter preference.

Meanwhile, in Puducherry, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved electoral success, driven largely by the performance of the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC), which secured 23.12 percent of the vote. The fragmented vote share among other parties contributed to the alliance’s ability to consolidate power in the Union Territory.

Overall, the vote share data from these elections highlights a broader realignment in Indian politics. While established parties such as the BJP and Congress continue to maintain strongholds in certain regions, the emergence of new players like TVK underscores a dynamic and evolving electorate. The figures point to a landscape where voter loyalties are increasingly fluid, and electoral outcomes are shaped by both performance and the appeal of new political alternatives.
