Claire Mazumdar Named Successor to Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw at Biocon
New Delhi, May 2026 : In a significant move signalling long-term leadership continuity, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, founder and chairperson of Biocon, has formally identified her niece, Claire Mazumdar, as her eventual successor. The announcement marks a key milestone in the company’s succession planning, though the transition is expected to unfold gradually over time.
Mazumdar-Shaw, one of India’s most prominent biotech pioneers, emphasised that as the primary owner of Biocon, it was crucial to ensure that the organisation’s future leadership remains capable and forward-looking. She expressed confidence in Claire Mazumdar’s ability to take on the responsibility, citing her strong track record in the biotechnology sector and her proven leadership capabilities.
However, she made it clear that there is no immediate plan to step down. Instead, the transition will be phased, allowing Claire to progressively assume greater responsibilities within the organisation while maintaining stability at the top.
Currently 37, Claire Mazumdar serves as the founding Chief Executive Officer of Bicara Therapeutics, a clinical-stage biotechnology company headquartered in Boston and focused on developing innovative cancer therapies. Under her leadership, the company has witnessed rapid growth, with its valuation surpassing $1.6 billion, reflecting strong investor confidence and strategic direction.
Claire brings with her an impressive academic and professional background. She holds a degree in Biological Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, and a PhD in Cancer Biology from Stanford School of Medicine. Her multidisciplinary training spans science, business, and research, positioning her well for leading a global biopharmaceutical enterprise.
Before taking the helm at Bicara Therapeutics in 2020, she worked at Third Rock Ventures and played a key role in business development and corporate strategy at Rheos Medicines. Her experience across venture capital and biotech innovation ecosystems adds depth to her leadership profile.
Beyond her corporate role, Claire is also engaged in the non-profit sector as a board member of Noora Health, which focuses on improving patient and caregiver education to enhance healthcare outcomes.
Mazumdar-Shaw further indicated that Claire would be supported by a broader family-led leadership ecosystem. This includes her brother, Eric Mazumdar, an artificial intelligence expert and professor at the California Institute of Technology, and her husband, Thomas Roberts, a noted oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.
The announcement underscores Biocon’s intent to ensure continuity while adapting to the evolving demands of the global biotech industry, with a leadership transition rooted in both experience and innovation.
