Ecuador Stun Germany 2-1 to Reach World Cup Knockouts for Only Second Time
New Jersey, June 2026: Ecuador scripted one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage, coming from behind to defeat four-time champions Germany 2-1 at New Jersey Stadium and book a historic place in the Round of 32.
A dramatic late winner from Gonzalo Plata sealed Ecuador’s memorable victory, ensuring they progressed as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams. It marks only the second time Ecuador have advanced beyond the group stage at a FIFA World Cup, having first achieved the feat in 2006.
Despite the defeat, Germany also progressed to the knockout stage by finishing top of the group on superior goal difference over Ivory Coast, with both teams ending the group phase on six points.
Germany made a dream start, taking the lead inside just two minutes through Leroy Sane. The winger capitalised on an early opportunity to fire past the Ecuadorian goalkeeper, registering Germany’s second-fastest goal in FIFA World Cup history. Only Ernst Lehner’s first-minute strike against Austria in the 1934 third-place playoff came earlier for the Germans at the global showpiece.
However, Ecuador refused to be rattled by the early setback and responded with remarkable composure. Just seven minutes later, they drew level through midfielder Nilson Angulo, who was making his first start of the tournament.
The equaliser came after Pablo Vite won possession in Germany’s half and slipped the ball into Angulo’s path. The youngster found space outside the penalty area before drilling a low effort through the legs of Aleksandar Pavlovic and beyond veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, leaving the German defence stunned.
The goal was Ecuador’s first of the FIFA World Cup 2026 and showcased the South American side’s growing confidence against one of football’s traditional powerhouses.
The second half produced its share of drama. Germany believed they had earned a penalty when referee Tori Penso pointed to the spot, but following a VAR review, the decision was overturned after officials identified an earlier foul committed by Sane on Vite during the attacking move.
Both teams continued to create opportunities as the contest remained finely balanced. Ecuador nearly grabbed the lead after a misunderstanding between Neuer and defender Jonathan Tah, but Plata failed to convert from close range, sending his effort over the crossbar.
Germany then threatened to restore their advantage when Sane raced clear on goal, only to be denied by Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez, whose timely save kept his side firmly in the contest.
With the match heading towards a draw, Ecuador produced the decisive moment in the closing stages. Substitute Kevin Rodriguez first forced a corner after seeing his shot deflected behind. From the resulting set-piece, Rodriguez flicked the delivery on at the near post, allowing Plata to react quickest and guide the ball past Neuer into the roof of the net.
The late strike sparked jubilant celebrations among the Ecuador players and supporters as they completed a famous comeback against one of the tournament favourites.
The victory not only secured Ecuador’s passage to the knockout stage but also underlined the team’s resilience and attacking quality. They will now head into the Round of 32 with renewed confidence, while Germany, despite the setback, will also continue their World Cup campaign after topping the group.
Brief Score:
Ecuador 2 (Nilson Angulo 9′, Gonzalo Plata 84′) bt Germany 1 (Leroy Sane 2′). Ecuador qualified for the Round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams, while Germany advanced as group winners on superior goal difference.
