Japan, Sweden Advance to FIFA World Cup Knockouts After Entertaining 1-1 Draw

Arlington, June 2026: Japan and Sweden secured places in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 after playing out an absorbing 1-1 draw at Arlington Stadium on Thursday, with both sides producing moments of quality in a contest that delivered the result each team ultimately needed.

Japan entered the final Group F fixture knowing that a draw would be enough to guarantee a top-two finish, while Sweden required a victory to overtake the Asian side and finish second in the standings. In the end, the stalemate confirmed Japan as Group F runners-up, while Sweden progressed as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams.

Japan will now face tournament favourites Brazil in Houston on June 30, while Sweden will discover their Round of 32 opponents after the conclusion of the remaining group-stage fixtures.

The match was closely contested from the outset, with Japan gradually taking control of possession and dictating the pace. The Blue Samurai pinned Sweden back for long periods during the opening half and created several promising opportunities.

Daizen Maeda came close to opening the scoring when he headed narrowly wide, while defender Yukinari Sugawara forced Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Zetterstrom into action with a powerful effort. Keito Nakamura then produced one of the best chances of the first half, only to be denied by a brilliant fingertip save from Zetterstrom, who pushed the curling strike around the post to keep the scores level.

Japan’s persistent pressure finally paid dividends 10 minutes into the second half. Ritsu Doan threaded a perfectly weighted through ball into the path of Maeda, who timed his run to perfection before calmly slotting his finish into the corner of the net to give Japan a deserved 1-0 lead.

However, Sweden responded with determination and restored parity just six minutes later through Anthony Elanga. Collecting possession on the right flank, the winger cut inside onto his stronger foot before unleashing a superb left-footed strike from around 20 yards that curled beyond goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into the far corner.

The equaliser lifted Sweden’s confidence, and they pushed hard in search of the winning goal that would have secured second place in the group.

Alexander Isak came agonisingly close to putting Sweden ahead when his powerful header was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Suzuki. The Japanese goalkeeper then produced another crucial save to deny Elanga as Sweden dominated the closing stages.

Despite the late pressure, Japan defended resolutely to preserve the draw, ensuring they finished second in Group F and earned a high-profile knockout clash against Brazil.

For Sweden, the result was enough to continue their World Cup journey despite missing out on automatic qualification. Their disciplined performance and resilience throughout the group stage ensured they progressed as one of the competition’s best third-placed teams.

Brief Score:
Japan 1 (Daizen Maeda 55′) drew with Sweden 1 (Anthony Elanga 61′). Japan qualified for the Round of 32 as Group F runners-up, while Sweden advanced as one of the tournament’s eight best third-placed teams.
