Kopra Reservoir to Be Developed as a Model Eco-Tourism Spot with Community and Women’s Participation

Raipur, May 2026: The Kopra Reservoir in Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district is being developed as a model eco-tourism destination, with strong emphasis on community participation and involvement of women’s groups. The reservoir, which has been designated a Ramsar Site, is the first of its kind in the state and is being conserved through coordinated efforts between local communities, the Forest Department, and environmental experts.

Following its recognition as a Ramsar site, a comprehensive plan has been prepared to ensure both conservation and sustainable development of the reservoir. At a high-level meeting involving officials from the State Wetland Authority, local village representatives, and women’s self-help groups, a detailed roadmap was finalised to protect the ecological balance of the reservoir while enhancing livelihood opportunities.

Key Action Plan and Decisions

As part of the first phase, the reservoir area will be made completely plastic-free. A solid waste management system will be implemented in nearby villages, along with regular cleanliness drives to maintain environmental standards.

To preserve the wetland ecosystem and maintain water quality, strict measures will be taken to curb illegal activities. A robust monitoring system will be established to protect natural vegetation and conserve rare flora and fauna in the region.

Boost to Local Employment and Tourism

Officials said that tourism potential at the Kopra Reservoir will be systematically developed, creating new employment opportunities for local residents. The area is being promoted for birdwatching and eco-tourism, which are expected to generate sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.

Participation of Youth and Women

To strengthen the initiative, local youth will be trained as “Wetland Mitras” (wetland friends), playing an active role in conservation and awareness efforts. Women’s self-help groups have taken responsibility for maintaining cleanliness and have proposed organising environmental awareness and training programmes at the village level.

Additionally, environmental education programmes will be introduced in schools to sensitise children about the importance of preserving this ecological heritage.

Coordinated Efforts for Sustainable Development

The State Wetland Authority will provide technical guidance and necessary resources for the project. An integrated action plan is being developed through coordination among various departments and local administration, aiming to ensure environmental protection alongside community empowerment.

The initiative is being seen as a significant step towards balancing ecological conservation with sustainable development, while placing local communities at the centre of the effort.
