US Launches ‘Project Freedom’ to Secure Strait of Hormuz Amid Escalating Tensions with Iran
May 2026 : In a major military and diplomatic move, the United States has launched a large-scale naval operation in the Strait of Hormuz to escort stranded commercial vessels and restore safe passage through one of the world’s most critical oil routes. The operation, named “Project Freedom,” was authorised by President Donald Trump, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Announcing the initiative at the White House, Rubio accused Iran of effectively “holding the global economy hostage” by blocking access to the narrow but vital maritime corridor. The Strait of Hormuz is a key artery for global energy supplies, with nearly a quarter of the world’s oil trade passing through it.
Rubio revealed that approximately 23,000 civilians from 87 countries are currently stranded aboard commercial vessels in the region due to escalating tensions and restricted navigation. He warned that the prolonged standoff has created a humanitarian concern, with ships facing shortages of essential supplies such as food and potable water.
“These are innocent sailors and crew members who have been left in extremely difficult conditions,” Rubio said, highlighting the urgency of the mission. He accused Iran of engaging in “piracy” by laying naval mines and threatening vessels attempting to pass through international waters.
Emphasising the legal dimension, Rubio stated that no nation has the authority to control or militarise an international shipping lane. He argued that targeting civilian ships or obstructing passage violates established international norms and maritime law.
Despite the strong rhetoric, Rubio stressed that the US operation is defensive in nature. “This is not an offensive mission. There will be no engagement unless our forces are attacked first,” he said. The primary objective, he added, is to ensure the safe movement of commercial shipping and prevent further escalation.
The scale of the operation reflects its strategic importance. US forces have deployed guided missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft, unmanned systems, and approximately 15,000 military personnel to the region. According to Rubio, these assets are working together to create a “protective bubble” around commercial vessels navigating the strait.
Initial phases of the mission have already seen some success. Rubio confirmed that two US-flagged merchant ships have safely crossed the Strait under military escort. He also noted that US forces had neutralised seven Iranian fast boats that approached commercial ships despite repeated warnings.
The operation aims to systematically clear threats and re-establish freedom of navigation in the strait. Rubio warned against allowing Iran to normalise control over such a crucial global route, stating that doing so would set a dangerous precedent.
Alongside military efforts, Washington is pursuing diplomatic action through the United Nations. Rubio said the US is urging the UN to formally condemn Iran’s actions, demand the removal of naval mines, and ensure the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian and commercial traffic.
He acknowledged that several countries have privately sought US assistance but maintained that the United States is uniquely positioned to respond بسرعة and effectively due to its global military capabilities. “We are acting not just in our own interest, but in the interest of global stability,” he said.
The Trump administration has also linked the crisis to broader tensions with Iran over its nuclear ambitions and regional influence. Rubio cautioned that the situation could become significantly more dangerous if Iran were to acquire nuclear weapons.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most sensitive geopolitical chokepoints in the world, serving as a lifeline for major economies including India, China, Japan, and South Korea. Any prolonged disruption in this corridor could have far-reaching consequences for global energy markets and economic stability.
As “Project Freedom” unfolds, the international community will be closely watching whether the operation succeeds in restoring safe passage while avoiding further escalation in an already volatile region.
