Samson Shines as CSK Cruise Past Delhi Capitals, Strengthen Playoff Push
May 2026 : Chennai Super Kings continued their impressive run in the Indian Premier League 2026 season with a dominant eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday, underlining their resurgence as serious playoff contenders.

Chasing a modest target of 156, CSK displayed composure and control, reaching 156/2 in just 17.3 overs. The chase was anchored by a sensational unbeaten 87 from Sanju Samson, who combined elegance with brute power in a 52-ball knock. His innings, laced with seven fours and six towering sixes, came at an impressive strike rate of 167.31 and ensured there were no major hiccups despite a brief middle-order wobble.
Samson found a reliable partner in Kartik Sharma, who remained unbeaten on 41 off 31 balls. The duo stitched together a match-winning partnership that effectively sealed the contest well before the final overs, demonstrating both maturity and attacking intent.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals had opted to bat first after winning the toss but failed to capitalise on what appeared to be a good batting surface. Their innings never truly gathered momentum, as CSK’s disciplined bowling attack kept them in check. Tristan Stubbs top-scored with a steady 38 off 31 deliveries, while Sameer Rizvi added an unbeaten 40 off 24 balls, providing some late resistance. A quick cameo from Ashutosh Sharma, who smashed 14 off just five balls, helped Delhi post 155/7 in their 20 overs.
However, the total proved insufficient against a well-rounded CSK side. The visitors’ bowling unit, particularly their spinners, played a crucial role in restricting the opposition. Noor Ahmad stood out with figures of 2 for 22 in his three overs, applying pressure during the middle phase. He was ably supported by Akeal Hosein, Mukesh Choudhary, Gurjapneet Singh, and Jamie Overton, who chipped in with one wicket each to keep Delhi’s scoring in check.
CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad credited the team’s revival this season to the consistent efforts of the bowling unit and hailed Samson as the backbone of the batting lineup. Reflecting on the team’s turnaround, Gaikwad noted that the side had remained confident even after a slow start to the tournament, with players gradually finding rhythm and cohesion.
He praised Samson’s match-winning innings, emphasizing the value of his experience and form, especially after a strong international campaign. Gaikwad also highlighted the understated contributions of bowlers like Hosein and Overton, who, according to him, have quietly delivered impactful performances throughout the season.
Speaking about the team’s approach, Gaikwad revealed that CSK rely heavily on in-game awareness rather than excessive planning, adapting quickly to pitch conditions and match situations. He also lauded Kartik Sharma’s innings, stating that the youngster always possessed the skillset but needed time and opportunity to showcase his abilities.
With this win, CSK moved to 10 points, inching closer to the tightly contested top five in the standings. As the league stage intensifies, their balanced performances with both bat and ball make them a formidable side. Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals will need to regroup quickly after this disappointing home defeat if they are to stay in contention for the playoffs.
