Revanth Reddy Seeks Centre’s Nod for Hyderabad Metro Phase-II Expansion
Hyderabad, May 2026 : A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday met Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in New Delhi, urging swift approval for the ambitious second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted the growing need for expanded metro connectivity in Hyderabad, citing rapid urbanisation and increasing commuter demand. He informed the Union Minister that the Telangana government has already prepared a comprehensive plan for Metro Rail Phase-II, consisting of seven corridors, and has submitted a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the Centre for approval.
According to the proposal, the Phase-II expansion will cover a total distance of 122.9 kilometres, with an estimated project cost of Rs 38,595 crore. Revanth Reddy requested that the project be taken up as a joint venture between the Union and state governments, stressing the importance of timely approval to ensure efficient execution.
The Chief Minister also raised the issue of pending clearances for both Phase-II and the proposed Phase-III of the metro network. He emphasised that expanding the metro system is crucial to providing safe, reliable, and convenient public transport for the city’s growing population.
Officials from the Chief Minister’s Office stated that Revanth Reddy informed the Union Minister about the state government’s recent decision to take full control of the Phase-I operations from L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited. He noted that this move was aimed at ensuring smoother coordination and faster implementation of future expansion phases.
By bringing Phase-I under direct government control, the state believes it will be better positioned to streamline planning and execution for upcoming projects, including Phases II and III. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that this step would remove operational bottlenecks and improve overall efficiency.
Looking ahead, Revanth Reddy also proposed the inclusion of a key corridor under Phase-III, connecting Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to the upcoming Bharat Future City. He informed the Union Minister that the DPR for Phase-III has already been submitted and requested early consideration to meet future transportation demands.
The meeting was attended by several senior officials, including Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary K. Srinivas, HMRCL Managing Director Sarfaraz Ahmed, and Telangana government advisors and officials involved in urban transport planning.
The push for metro expansion comes as Hyderabad continues to grow as a major urban and economic hub, with increasing pressure on its transportation infrastructure. The state government has underscored that a robust and expanded metro network will play a key role in easing traffic congestion, improving mobility, and supporting sustainable urban development in the years ahead.
