IPL 2026: Klaasen’s 69 Powers SRH to 235/4; Credits Explosive Opening Duo for Flying Start
Score: Sunrisers Hyderabad 235/4 (20 overs) vs Punjab Kings
Hyderabad, May 2026 : A commanding batting display led by Heinrich Klaasen powered Sunrisers Hyderabad to a massive total of 235/4 against Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League 2026 clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday. Klaasen’s blistering 69 anchored the innings, but the South African star was quick to credit the team’s openers for laying the perfect foundation.
Praising the dynamic opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, Klaasen described their approach as effortless and impactful. “It’s fantastic to watch them. They make it look so easy,” he said during the mid-innings break, highlighting how their aggressive start set the tone for the innings.
The duo once again delivered a fiery powerplay, propelling SRH to 79/1 in the first six overs. Abhishek Sharma took charge early, dismantling the Punjab Kings bowling attack with fearless strokeplay, while Head complemented him with attacking intent. Their partnership ensured that SRH maintained a high scoring rate from the outset.
Despite the strong start, Klaasen noted that batting was not entirely straightforward as the innings progressed. “The pitch started to slow down a bit, and the ball wasn’t coming on as nicely in the middle overs. There’s not a lot of bounce, but it’s still a very good wicket to bat on,” he explained, emphasising the need for adaptability.
After Head’s dismissal, Ishan Kishan stepped in to sustain the momentum. Kishan capitalised on opportunities, scoring a quickfire 55 off 32 balls, including three consecutive sixes to reach his half-century. His aggressive knock ensured SRH never lost control of the scoring rate.
Klaasen then took charge in the latter half of the innings. Although he received an early reprieve, he made the most of it with a composed yet powerful innings. Bringing up his fifty in just 32 balls, Klaasen accelerated brilliantly in the death overs. He was well supported by Nitish Kumar Reddy, whose late cameo added further impetus as SRH crossed the 200-run mark in the 18th over.
Reflecting on the team’s bowling strategy for the second innings, Klaasen kept things simple. “No complicated plans—just stick to what works on this surface,” he said, expressing confidence in the bowling unit’s ability to defend the imposing total.
With this performance, Sunrisers Hyderabad once again showcased their batting depth and firepower, reinforcing their reputation as one of the most dangerous sides in IPL 2026. Their ability to combine explosive starts with strong finishes continues to make them a formidable opponent for any team in the tournament.
