DMK Holds Key MLA Meeting as Tamil Nadu Political Equations Shift After Poll Verdict
Chennai, May 2026 : M.K. Stalin on Thursday chaired a crucial meeting of the newly elected DMK legislators at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai as the party prepared to take on the role of the Opposition amid continuing uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu following the Assembly election results.
The meeting, attended by all victorious DMK MLAs, focused on the rapidly evolving political developments in the state, the party’s legislative strategy, and its future course of action in the Assembly. Senior leaders discussed the changing political alignments and the challenges ahead as efforts continue among various parties to secure support for government formation.
The recently concluded Tamil Nadu Assembly elections produced a fragmented verdict and triggered significant post-poll political realignments. The DMK-led alliance secured 73 seats in the 234-member Assembly. However, the political equation changed dramatically after the Congress, which had won five seats as part of the alliance, shifted its support to the C. Joseph Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The TVK emerged as the single largest formation with 108 seats, placing it in a strong position in the race to form the next government. However, the party still requires additional support to cross the majority mark of 113 seats in the Assembly.
Sources indicated that the TVK has intensified efforts to gather backing from smaller parties and independent legislators. Discussions are reportedly underway with the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), each of which has four MLAs in the new Assembly. Their support is being viewed as crucial in the ongoing political negotiations.
Following the Congress decision to back the TVK, the effective strength of the DMK alliance has come down to 68 MLAs, making it increasingly likely that the party will occupy the Opposition benches in the Assembly.
The election outcome also delivered a major personal setback to M.K. Stalin, who lost the Kolathur Assembly constituency to TVK candidate V.S. Babu by a margin of nearly 10,000 votes. The defeat is being regarded as one of the most significant electoral setbacks for the DMK leadership in recent years and has sparked intense political discussions within the state.
Despite Stalin’s defeat, Udhayanidhi Stalin retained the Chepauk-Triplicane constituency, further consolidating his position within the party. Political observers believe that he is likely to be elected leader of the DMK Legislature Party, which could eventually pave the way for him to assume the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly.
During the meeting, Stalin is learnt to have assured party MLAs that the DMK would not interfere in the TVK’s efforts to secure the required legislative support to form the government. Party leaders also reportedly discussed strengthening the organisation and preparing for an aggressive Opposition role in the Assembly.
With political negotiations continuing and alliances shifting rapidly, Tamil Nadu remains in a state of political uncertainty. The coming days are expected to be crucial as parties work to secure numbers and shape the future government in the state.
