Pope Leo XIV Meets Marco Rubio, Discusses Global Conflicts and Humanitarian Crises
Vatican City, May 2026 : Pope Leo XIV met with Marco Rubio at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican on Thursday during the latter’s visit to Italy.
According to a statement issued by the Holy See Press Office, the meeting was held in a cordial atmosphere and focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the Holy See and the United States. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining constructive diplomatic ties and cooperation on international issues.
The discussions also covered several regional and global challenges, particularly ongoing conflicts, political tensions, and humanitarian crises affecting various parts of the world. The Vatican stated that both leaders stressed the importance of continuing efforts to promote peace and stability in conflict-hit regions.
The talks reportedly included discussions on countries in Africa and the Middle East facing war and unrest, including Lebanon and Iran. Concerns surrounding humanitarian conditions and the broader geopolitical situation in these regions were also addressed during the meeting.
In addition, Pope Leo XIV and Rubio discussed Cuba amid recent tensions between Havana and Washington. The meeting highlighted the Vatican’s continued diplomatic engagement on global peace and humanitarian concerns.
