Vijay-Led TVK Secures Majority to Form Government in Tamil Nadu

May 2026 : In a major political breakthrough in Tamil Nadu, the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, has secured the numbers required to form the next government in the state. The support extended by the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) has helped TVK cross the crucial majority mark of 118 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

TVK emerged as the single largest party in the recently concluded Assembly elections by winning 108 seats. However, since Vijay secured victory from two constituencies, the party’s effective strength in the Assembly stands at 107 MLAs. Earlier, the Congress party, with five MLAs, had already announced its support to the Vijay-led formation, taking the alliance tally to 112.

The latest support from VCK, CPI, and CPM has now pushed the combined strength to 118 seats — exactly the number required to claim a majority in the 234-member Assembly.

Sources said Vijay is scheduled to meet the Governor of Tamil Nadu at 4:30 PM today to formally stake claim to form the government. During the meeting, he is expected to submit letters of support from allied MLAs backing the TVK-led coalition. Official announcements from CPI, CPM, and VCK confirming their support are likely to be issued later in the evening.

The political development marks a dramatic shift in Tamil Nadu politics, traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK. Vijay’s rise from cinema superstar to a potential Chief Minister has generated widespread attention across the state and the country.

With support coming from secular and Left-oriented parties, the emerging coalition is expected to position itself as an alternative political force in Tamil Nadu, ushering in a new era in the state’s political landscape.
