CSK Opt to Bowl Against LSG as Playoff Race Intensifies in Chennai

Chennai, May 2026 : Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and elected to bowl first against Lucknow Super Giants in Match 53 of the Indian Premier League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday.

The contest carries significant importance for both teams as the race for the playoffs enters a crucial stage. Chennai Super Kings, currently placed sixth on the points table, are aiming to continue their resurgence and strengthen their qualification hopes. Meanwhile, Lucknow Super Giants entered the game after finally ending a difficult six-match losing streak with a narrow nine-run victory over defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

After opting to field, Gaikwad said the decision was influenced by the conditions, especially after rain in Chennai over the past few days.

“The wicket was under covers and there was rain around. The pitch behaves differently in day games, but we need to adapt quickly and restrict them to a manageable score. We are positive about the way the last seven or eight games have gone for us. It has been a good turnaround and we want to maintain that momentum,” the CSK skipper said.

Chennai retained the same playing XI that featured in their previous outing, showing confidence in a settled combination ahead of the business end of the tournament.

Lucknow captain Rishabh Pant admitted that his side would also have preferred to bowl first on the red-soil surface. He confirmed two changes to the lineup, with Josh Inglis and Avesh Khan replacing Arshin Kulkarni and Mayank Yadav.

“We would have bowled first as well. We need to win all our remaining matches and, more importantly, play consistent cricket. We have had our opportunities in several games but failed to finish strongly. The focus now is on giving our best in every match,” Pant said.

For Chennai, the batting lineup features wicketkeeper Sanju Samson alongside Gaikwad, Urvil Patel, Kartik Sharma, Dewald Brevis and Shivam Dube. The bowling attack includes Akeal Hosein, Noor Ahmed and Mukesh Choudhary.

Lucknow’s batting unit will rely heavily on the explosive trio of Mitchell Marsh, Nicholas Pooran and Pant, while experienced pacer Mohammed Shami leads the bowling attack.

With both teams desperate for crucial points, an intense contest is expected in Chennai as the IPL playoff battle heats up.
