Vijay Stakes Claim to Form Government in Tamil Nadu After Securing Majority Support
Chennai, May 2026 : Actor-politician Vijay on Friday formally staked claim to form the government in Tamil Nadu after his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) secured the support of several opposition parties, pushing the alliance comfortably past the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly.
Vijay met Governor R. N. Ravi at Raj Bhavan in Chennai and submitted letters of support from allied parties and independent legislators backing his claim to form the next government. The meeting comes after days of political uncertainty following the fractured verdict in the Assembly elections held on April 23, the results of which were declared on May 4.
According to political sources, the Governor is expected to formally invite Vijay to form the government either later on Friday or early Saturday. The swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place in Chennai at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections by winning 108 seats, marking a stunning electoral debut for the party that was launched less than a year ago. However, the party initially fell short of the majority mark of 118 seats required to form the government in the Assembly.
The first major breakthrough for Vijay came when the Indian National Congress extended support to TVK. The Congress, which secured five seats in the elections, announced that its MLAs would support Vijay’s bid to form the government.
On Friday evening, four more parties — the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) — also formally announced their support for the TVK-led coalition.
Each of these four parties has two MLAs in the new Assembly, taking the total strength of the Vijay-led camp to 120 legislators, comfortably above the halfway mark required to establish a majority in the House.
Soon after meeting the Governor, Vijay visited the CPI state headquarters in Chennai and personally thanked Left party leaders for supporting his efforts to form a stable government. Leaders from the supporting parties stated that their decision was guided by the need to ensure political stability and avoid prolonged uncertainty in the state.
The developments mark a dramatic shift in Tamil Nadu politics, traditionally dominated by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Vijay’s rapid political rise from cinema superstar to Chief Minister-designate has generated enormous public attention and reshaped the state’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, Vijay will also have to resign from one of the two Assembly constituencies from which he was elected, as Election Commission rules do not permit a legislator to retain two seats simultaneously.
If formally invited by the Governor, Vijay is set to become Tamil Nadu’s next Chief Minister, marking the beginning of a new political era in the state.
