Karuppiah Appointed Pro-tem Speaker as TVK Government Takes Charge in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, May 2026 : In a significant political development following the formation of the new government in Tamil Nadu, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA M.V. Karuppiah was on Sunday appointed as the Pro-tem Speaker of the newly elected Tamil Nadu Assembly. The appointment was announced ahead of the first session of the 16th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, which is scheduled to convene on Monday.

Karuppiah’s appointment comes soon after TVK founder and actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay officially assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after leading his party to a historic electoral victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

The TVK emerged as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly by securing 108 seats, marking a dramatic shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The party subsequently formed the government with the support of alliance partners including the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), CPI, CPI(M), and the IUML. The development has effectively ended decades of alternating rule by the DMK and AIADMK in the state.

Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay at a grand swearing-in ceremony held at the Nehru Indoor Stadium on Sunday morning. Along with the Chief Minister, nine Ministers were also sworn in as members of the new Cabinet.

Soon after assuming office, Chief Minister Vijay moved swiftly to signal the priorities of his administration by signing three major files. These included the implementation of 200 units of free electricity for households, the creation of the “SingaPen” Special Task Force aimed at women’s safety and welfare, and the establishment of a special anti-drug enforcement unit to combat the growing menace of narcotics in the state.

Following the swearing-in ceremony, Vijay proceeded to the Secretariat and formally took charge of the administration.

Amid these developments, the appointment of M.V. Karuppiah as Pro-tem Speaker has drawn considerable political attention. As Pro-tem Speaker, Karuppiah will administer the oath to all newly elected MLAs and oversee the initial proceedings of the Assembly, including the election of the full-time Speaker.

Karuppiah, who represents the Cholavandan Assembly constituency, hails from Vavidamaruthur village near Alanganallur in Madurai district. A seasoned politician with decades of grassroots political experience, he was associated with the AIADMK since 1980 and held several organisational responsibilities within the party. He also served as secretary of a fishermen’s union during his long political career.

He first entered the Tamil Nadu Assembly in 2011 after contesting from Cholavandan as an AIADMK candidate. He won the election with a margin exceeding 36,000 votes and earned recognition as a strong grassroots leader in the region.

However, despite his long association with the AIADMK, Karuppiah was denied party tickets in both the 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections. Feeling sidelined within the party, he eventually parted ways with the AIADMK earlier this year and joined the TVK after discussions with senior AIADMK leader K. A. Sengottaiyan.

Recognising his political experience and local influence, Vijay fielded Karuppiah once again from the Cholavandan constituency in the 2026 Assembly elections. Karuppiah successfully regained the seat, marking a major comeback in his political career.

Political observers view his appointment as Pro-tem Speaker as both a reward for his long public life and a symbolic gesture by the new TVK government to honour experienced leaders who joined the party during its rise to power.

Team Maverick.
