IPL 2026: Bhuvneshwar’s Four-Wicket Burst Restricts MI to 166/7 Despite Tilak Varma’s Fighting Fifty

Score: Mumbai Indians 166/7 in 20 overs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Raipur, May 2026: Veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar rolled back the years with a superb new-ball spell before Tilak Varma produced a composed half-century to rescue Mumbai Indians and guide them to 166/7 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their IPL 2026 clash at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium on Sunday.

After winning the toss, RCB captain Rajat Patidar opted to bowl first on a challenging Raipur pitch that showed visible cracks and offered uneven bounce right from the beginning. The decision quickly paid dividends as Bhuvneshwar exploited the helpful conditions brilliantly with a masterclass in swing and variation bowling.

The experienced pacer struck in the very first over when Ryan Rickelton attempted an ambitious lofted drive but mistimed it straight to mid-off. The early breakthrough immediately put Mumbai under pressure.

However, senior opener Rohit Sharma tried to counterattack aggressively. The former Mumbai skipper targeted Josh Hazlewood in the second over, smashing two sixes and a boundary to collect 18 runs and briefly shift the momentum.

Rohit looked determined to disrupt RCB’s disciplined lengths, but Bhuvneshwar responded with intelligence and experience. Mixing up his pace cleverly, the seamer dismissed Rohit for 22 with a deceptive knuckleball that induced a thick outside edge.

Mumbai’s problems worsened immediately after that as stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav endured a disappointing return. Playing his first match after travelling home for the birth of his daughter, Suryakumar lasted just one delivery before edging behind to Virat Kohli at first slip.

From a promising 22/1, Mumbai suddenly collapsed to 28/3 within a few deliveries, with Bhuvneshwar narrowly missing a hat-trick in a devastating opening spell.

On a surface where timing the ball cleanly proved difficult, Mumbai needed a rebuilding effort, and that responsibility was taken up by Tilak Varma and Naman Dhir.

The duo stitched together a vital partnership during the middle overs to stabilise the innings. Rather than taking unnecessary risks, both batters focused on rotating strike regularly while punishing loose deliveries whenever opportunities arose.

Tilak looked particularly comfortable against spin and used the crease smartly against Krunal Pandya and Suyash Sharma. Naman, meanwhile, used the pace of the ball effectively and found boundaries square of the wicket with innovative strokeplay.

RCB’s fielding standards briefly dipped during this phase, allowing Mumbai to regain momentum. Tilak received a major reprieve when Suyash Sharma dropped a straightforward top-edged chance at mid-wicket. Another misfield from Romario Shepherd also gifted Mumbai an easy boundary.

Those missed opportunities proved costly as Tilak and Naman slowly rebuilt the innings and brought some stability after the early collapse.

Naman Dhir, who mixed caution with aggression impressively, looked set for a deserving half-century. But RCB finally broke the stand in the 13th over through Rasikh Salam Dar. The young pacer delivered a skiddy back-of-a-length ball that sneaked through Naman’s defence and crashed into the stumps.

Naman departed after a valuable 47 off 32 balls, an innings that kept Mumbai alive after their disastrous start.

Tilak Varma, however, continued to anchor the innings superbly from the other end. The left-hander brought up a composed fifty with a late cut off Rasikh Salam and then accelerated in the death overs.

He struck a massive slog sweep against Suyash Sharma and followed it with a stylish straight boundary off Bhuvneshwar Kumar as Mumbai attempted to push beyond the 170-run mark.

But just when Tilak looked set to provide a strong finish, Bhuvneshwar returned to produce another crucial breakthrough. Attempting an audacious scoop shot, Tilak dragged the ball back onto his stumps and departed for an excellent 57 off 42 balls.

Bhuvneshwar finished with outstanding figures of 4/23 in his four overs, delivering one of the finest spells of the IPL 2026 season so far. The performance also saw him become only the second bowler after Harshal Patel to register six three-wicket hauls in a single IPL season.

RCB bowlers maintained excellent control in the final overs, with Hazlewood, Rasikh Salam Dar, and Romario Shepherd ensuring Mumbai managed only 31 runs in the last five overs.

Despite falling short of a bigger total, Mumbai Indians will still take confidence from the challenging nature of the Raipur surface and hope their bowlers can defend the target under pressure.

Brief Scores:
Mumbai Indians 166/7 in 20 overs (Tilak Varma 57, Naman Dhir 47; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 4/23, Romario Shepherd 1/18) against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Team Maverick.
