Delhi Capitals Script Historic Chase to Stun Punjab Kings in Dharamsala Thriller
Dharamsala, May 2026 : Delhi Capitals produced one of the most remarkable run chases in Indian Premier League history, overcoming a daunting target of 211 to defeat Punjab Kings by three wickets in a high-scoring thriller at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on Monday. The victory not only kept Delhi’s slim playoff hopes alive but also marked the highest successful chase ever recorded in Dharamsala in IPL history.
Chasing 211, Delhi Capitals reached 216/7 in 19 overs after recovering from multiple setbacks, including a disastrous start that saw them reduced to 14/2 and later 38/3 in the powerplay. Captain Axar Patel led from the front with a vital 56, while David Miller hammered a match-turning half-century. Debutant Madhav Tiwari then displayed nerves of steel with a fearless late cameo that shifted the momentum decisively in Delhi’s favour.
Punjab Kings appeared firmly in control early in the chase. Arshdeep Singh and Shardul Thakur exploited the lively conditions brilliantly, troubling the Delhi top order with movement and bounce. Thakur struck first by bowling Abishek Porel with a sharp delivery that uprooted the middle stump. Soon after, KL Rahul top-edged a pull shot off Arshdeep, and Marco Jansen completed a sensational diving catch to leave Delhi struggling at 14/2 after three overs.
Youngster Sahil Parakh briefly counterattacked, smashing a six off Thakur and helping Delhi score 20 runs in the fourth over alongside Tristan Stubbs. However, Arshdeep returned to dismiss Parakh for 14 as Delhi slipped further into trouble at 38/3.
At that stage, Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs steadied the innings with a measured partnership. Punjab’s fielding, though, proved costly. Stubbs received a lifeline when Arshdeep dropped him at long-on, while Axar also benefited from a missed chance at deep square leg. Despite the reprieves, Stubbs’ stay ended in an unfortunate run-out after a direct hit from Cooper Connolly caught him short.
With the required rate climbing, David Miller joined Axar and transformed the chase with a stunning counterattack. Dew began to affect the bowlers, making the ball difficult to grip, and Punjab struggled to maintain discipline. Axar finally rediscovered his touch after a lean run in the tournament, smashing Marcus Stoinis for three consecutive boundaries before bringing up his fifty off just 28 balls.
Miller complemented him perfectly, launching Marco Jansen for towering sixes and crucial boundaries as Delhi kept pace with the required rate. Even after Arshdeep delivered an excellent spell and finished with figures of 2/21, Miller ensured the game remained alive.
The turning point came in the 17th over when Miller attacked Jansen with two massive sixes. Although he fell trying to clear the ropes again, his aggressive 51 had already tilted the contest back in Delhi’s favour.
IPL debutant Madhav Tiwari then emerged as the unlikely hero. Displaying extraordinary composure under pressure, the youngster smashed boundaries at critical moments and added 19 runs alongside Ashutosh Sharma in a game-changing over against Stoinis. Tiwari’s quickfire 18 off just eight balls injected fresh belief into the Delhi dugout.
Needing 17 runs from the final two overs, Delhi continued to attack fearlessly. Ashutosh Sharma struck a six before getting dismissed, but a no-ball boundary kept Delhi ahead in the contest. Eventually, Auqib Nabi sealed the memorable victory by smashing a huge six, triggering wild celebrations in the Delhi camp.
Earlier, Punjab Kings had posted an imposing 210/5 after a blistering start from Priyansh Arya, who smashed 56 off 33 balls. Arya launched Mitchell Starc for a first-ball six and dominated the powerplay as Punjab raced to 72/0 in six overs. Captain Shreyas Iyer anchored the innings superbly with an unbeaten 59, while Suryansh Shedge provided late fireworks with a sensational assault on Starc in the penultimate over.
Despite posting a total above 200, Punjab Kings failed to defend it due to inconsistent bowling and poor fielding. After the defeat, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer admitted his side fell short in execution.
“Fielding and bowling let us down again. On this pitch, 210 should have been enough. We didn’t execute our plans properly,” Iyer said after the match.
The dramatic victory breathed fresh life into Delhi Capitals’ campaign, while Punjab Kings were left to rue missed opportunities in a contest that will long be remembered as one of the season’s greatest thrillers.
