PM Modi Conferred Norway’s Highest Civilian Honour, Strengthens India-Norway Green Strategic Partnership

Oslo, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on Monday conferred with Norway’s highest civilian honour, the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, by King Harald V in Oslo, marking another major diplomatic recognition for the Indian leader during his ongoing five-nation international tour.

The honour, presented by the Norwegian monarch during PM Modi’s official visit, became the 32nd international award conferred upon him by a foreign nation and the second such recognition during the current overseas tour.

Just a day earlier, Sweden had honoured PM Modi with the Royal Order of the Polar Star, Commander Grand Cross, its highest civilian distinction awarded to foreign dignitaries. The back-to-back honours have drawn attention to India’s expanding diplomatic profile and Modi’s growing global outreach.

After receiving the Norwegian honour, PM Modi dedicated the recognition to the people of India and highlighted the deepening friendship between the two countries.

“Honoured to receive the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit. This honour is dedicated to the people of India and is a tribute to the enduring friendship between India and Norway. It reflects our shared commitment to global progress,” the Prime Minister said.

Political observers and foreign policy analysts described the recognition as another sign of India’s growing influence on the global stage. They noted that PM Modi’s increasing international engagements, speeches in foreign parliaments and strengthening strategic partnerships with multiple countries have projected India as a leading voice of the Global South.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi held extensive bilateral discussions with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, focusing on strengthening economic cooperation, green transition initiatives and strategic collaboration across emerging sectors.

The two leaders agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a “Green Strategic Partnership”, signalling a new phase in India-Norway cooperation focused on sustainability, renewable energy and climate-oriented technologies.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussions covered a wide range of areas including trade and investment, blue economy, circular economy, renewable energy, education, science and technology, artificial intelligence, space cooperation and Arctic research.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the leaders held both restricted and delegation-level talks in Oslo and reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store held restricted and delegation-level talks in Oslo. The leaders agreed to elevate India-Norway relations to a Green Strategic Partnership which marks a milestone in advancing collaboration in the areas of clean energy, blue economy and green transition,” Jaiswal posted on X.

He further said the leaders acknowledged the opportunities emerging from the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, especially in the fields of trade expansion, technology cooperation and job creation.

“Both leaders noted the immense opportunities arising from the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement especially in trade, technology collaboration and job creation,” he added.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including cooperation in multilateral forums. According to the MEA, Prime Minister Store expressed strong support for India’s efforts in combating terrorism globally.

The Norwegian leader’s backing comes at a time when India has been actively engaging international partners on issues related to security, terrorism and geopolitical stability.

PM Modi’s Norway visit is significant not only diplomatically but also historically, as it marks the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Norway in 43 years. It is also Modi’s maiden visit to the Nordic country since assuming office.

During his two-day stay in Oslo, PM Modi is also scheduled to attend the third India-Nordic Summit, where leaders from Nordic countries are expected to discuss regional cooperation, innovation, sustainability and economic partnerships with India.

The MEA described Norway as a “valued partner” and expressed confidence that the visit would inject fresh momentum into bilateral ties.

“Norway is a valued partner for India. The visit is set to add fresh vigour to the India-Norway partnership,” Randhir Jaiswal stated.

PM Modi arrived in Norway after concluding his visit to Sweden as part of his broader diplomatic outreach across Europe and other partner nations.
