Assam: 05 Kilometres Stretch Of NH-27 In Nalbari To Be Transformed As Emergency Runway.

Nalbari; May 2026: Around a 05 km stretch of NH 27 from Tihu to Madhapur in Nalbari district will be developed as an Emergency Landing Facility (ELF), said Nibedan Das Patowary, District Commissioner (DC) of Nalbari, during a meeting of the District Development Committee yesterday (Tuesday – 19th May 2026). During the meeting, the DC took stock of the situation of the national highway from the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). He directed all concerned departments not to build any infrastructure along the road.

ELFs on national highways are specially engineered road stretches designed to function as auxiliary airstrips for military and civil aircraft during emergencies, disasters, or wartime contingencies when conventional airbases are compromised or unavailable.

Earlier, on February 14th this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the operational emergency landing facility (ELF) at Moran, where fighter jets and transport aircraft are to land. “Northeast region is close to both China and Myanmar, and such infrastructure strengthens deterrence. The PM while inaugurating the Moran in the presence of the Air Chief Marshal, had sent a very strong message that India is ready for everything on this front”, the CM Himanta Biswa Sarma had then said.

The Chief Minister also announced that the state will soon sign a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to explore the possibility of developing 04 new airports in Majuli, Diphu, Umrangso, and Manas. “If land is available, these airports can become operational in the next five years. This will improve regional connectivity and boost tourism and economic growth”, the CM had then said.
