Russia Launches Intense Missile and Drone Assault on Kyiv, Injuring Residents and Damaging Infrastructure.
Russia unleashed a barrage of drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles on Kyiv early Monday, causing widespread damage and injuring at least two people. The assault targeted various districts across the Ukrainian capital, with debris from downed missiles sparking fires and damaging homes, infrastructure, and vehicles.
Ukraine’s air defense units successfully intercepted and destroyed more than 10 cruise missiles and nearly 10 ballistic missiles, according to the city’s military administration. Despite the defense efforts, falling debris caused significant damage, including partial destruction of a boiler house at a water plant and the entrance to a metro station serving as a bomb shelter.
The attacks triggered air raid alerts across Ukraine for nearly two hours, and neighboring NATO member Poland activated its air defense systems to ensure the safety of its airspace. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that emergency services were deployed to several districts, including Solomyanskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Shevchenkivskyi, where cars were set ablaze and buildings were damaged.
This assault comes just a week after Moscow launched one of the largest missile attacks of the war, killing seven people and striking energy facilities across Ukraine. The head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, vowed that Ukraine would respond to these continued attacks, emphasizing that the enemy would face consequences.
