Rajasthan Royals Cross 200 After Lower-Order Fightback Against Mumbai Indians

Mumbai, May 2026 : Rajasthan Royals produced a spirited lower-order recovery to post a competitive 205/8 against Mumbai Indians in their crucial Indian Premier League 2026 clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. In a match that carried massive playoff implications for Rajasthan, the visitors overcame a shaky start and a middle-order collapse with a powerful late flourish to keep their hopes alive.

Playing in hot and humid afternoon conditions in the only day game at Wankhede this season, Rajasthan Royals struggled to build sustained partnerships for most of their innings. However, aggressive cameos from the lower middle-order and tailenders helped them add 73 runs in the final five overs and push the total beyond the 200-run mark.

Mumbai Indians, despite missing ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, delivered a disciplined bowling effort for most parts of the innings. Deepak Chahar and Shardul Thakur picked up two wickets each, while Will Jacks, AM Ghazanfar and Corbin Bosch chipped in with one wicket apiece.

After being asked to bat first, Rajasthan Royals started positively with Yashasvi Jaiswal looking in excellent touch. The left-hander attacked Deepak Chahar early, smashing him for two towering sixes in the opening overs. Young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also attempted to get going quickly and nearly cleared the boundary before a brilliant effort from Will Jacks turned a potential six into a single.

Jaiswal survived an early lbw appeal after Mumbai’s review resulted in an “umpire’s call,” but his aggressive approach eventually cost him his wicket. Attempting another big shot against Will Jacks, he mistimed the delivery and was caught at point by Corbin Bosch after scoring a brisk 27 off 17 balls.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi failed to convert his start and was dismissed for 4 by Deepak Chahar. Rajasthan skipper Riyan Parag injected some momentum with two boundaries and a six in his quick 14-run cameo, but he too departed before the end of the Power-play, edging AM Ghazanfar to backward point. Rajasthan ended the first six overs at 54/3.

With wickets falling regularly, Dhruv Jurel and Dasun Shanaka attempted to steady the innings. The duo added valuable runs through intelligent strokeplay and aggressive intent. Shanaka, in particular, counterattacked brilliantly, smashing three sixes during his entertaining 29 off just 15 deliveries.

However, Rajasthan’s troubles resurfaced when Shanaka was run out against the flow of play. Soon after, Corbin Bosch produced a superb yorker to bowl Jurel for 38 off 26 balls. Jurel’s innings included three boundaries and two sixes and briefly gave Rajasthan hope of a stronger finish.

At 119/5, the Royals were once again under pressure. Donovan Ferreira played a short but aggressive innings, smashing sixes off Raghu Sharma and Deepak Chahar before falling for 16. Chahar deceived him with a slower delivery immediately after being hit for six.

Jofra Archer then provided the innings with much-needed momentum in the death overs. The England pacer played a fearless cameo, hammering two sixes and a four in his 15-ball 32. His aggressive batting ensured Rajasthan regained control during the final overs.

Mumbai Indians fought back through Shardul Thakur, who struck twice during the closing stages to slow Rajasthan’s acceleration. Yet Ravindra Jadeja, introduced as an Impact Substitute, added crucial late runs with a quick 19 off 11 balls, including two boundaries. Nandre Burger also chipped in with an unbeaten 10 from just three deliveries, including a huge six that helped Rajasthan cross the 200-run mark.

Despite the strong finish, Rajasthan Royals may still feel the total is only slightly above par considering Mumbai Indians’ formidable batting lineup and the likelihood of improved batting conditions later in the evening.

For Mumbai Indians, the bowling performance reflected discipline and control under difficult conditions. Deepak Chahar impressed in Bumrah’s absence with figures of 2/43, while Shardul Thakur claimed 2/41. Will Jacks bowled economically, conceding only 12 runs while taking an important wicket.

Rajasthan Royals now face the daunting task of defending the total in a must-win encounter to stay alive in the playoff race.

Brief Scores:
Rajasthan Royals 205/8 in 20 overs (Dhruv Jurel 38, Jofra Archer 32, Yashasvi Jaiswal 27; Shardul Thakur 2/41, Deepak Chahar 2/43) vs Mumbai Indians.
